View Full Version : Anybody using Thumb shifters on drop or dirt drop bars?

I'm setting up a bike with some On-One Midge handlebars and thinking of going 1x9.

One option obviously is a bar end shifter set up for the rear, but I was wondering if I could install a thumbie on the bars and be able to flick the shifter with my thumb while in the normal dirt drop riding position.

Thoughts? Opinions? Ideas?

Thanks.

I don't know about thumb shifters, but I've got a bar-end 1x9 setup on my Pugsley and it works quite well. These are On-One Midge bars.

Here's a traditional set-up on the new WTB Dirt Drop bars on my Big Dummy:

Here's a traditional setup on old-style WTB/Specialized Dirt Drops on my Atlantis:

It'll depend on the clamp diameter of the thumbshifter and the diamter of the area in which you intend to clamp it. Most old-school thumbies were designed for 25.4 bars. You could get some bar-end shifters and some Paul Thumbies, as they come in both 25.4 and 26.0 diameter sizes.

Pauls Thumbies with 9 speed DA bar ends on my converted Trek 750.

Resurrecting this... I'm looking at options to run an MTB rear mech 1x with drop bars.

Has anyone tried Paul's Thumbies mounted on the curve of the drop?

Aiming for end result a bit like the Sunrace shifters referenced above

With all of the interest in drop bar 26 inch bikes, someone needs to do a run of old school wtb inspired shift perches that work with bar end / aero shifters. If I knew how to do 3d printing I'd take a crack at it as I plan to do this soon to a bike.

I actually have new Kelly Take-Offs I was going to use on a CX build a while ago.
You should look at those if you want some alternatives

I use a Paul thumbie for the front triple on my Ahearne.

Bike has drop bars and ultegra 10 speed, and the front shifter won't work with a triple crank (especially since it's only for a double).

Works fine, but of course there's not as much shifting going on up front as there is in the rear.

Thanks. Kelly Take-Offs are interesting but I'm keen to get the shifter mounted more 'alongside' the drop - a bit like https://forums.thepaceline.net/attac...7&d=1257965034

Could a thumbie be positioned like this? (Might mean using a left thumbie on the righthand drop to get things aligned right?)

Can't see your link, but have you seen Gevenalle?

That setup would drive me nuts, only comfortable hand positions would be the tops (can't shift from there) or the hooks (can't shift from there either) and riding on the hoods or the ramps would be really awkward. (much) better off with DT shifters than that Sunrace setup. What's the objective there? For a midge with a single shifter, I'd consider chopping off a couple of cm's from the right side of the bar and installing a bar end to keep it from sticking out too far, what I used to do when I raced CX with barends BITD.

I think Paul did a mount for SRAM trigger shifters - the modern ones. Not great ergonomics, but excellent sram shifting for 11 speed!

Friction only, but there are the Dia Compe wing shifters, based off old Suntour stuff:
