yesterday i found this bike on ebay
and made an offer in order to ask a few questions about the bike.
the seller ended the auction
accepting my bid...
today we've exchanged several emails
he's been paid
is shipping the bike to me for free
and including stem, spacers, saddle and post...
...i was going to post it in the classifieds
but now will be expecting it to be delivered this week
for me to enjoy, myself!
don walker pricetag: $400.00
joy of the experience: priceless!

Don Walker is a local Indy guy, never been to his shop and haven't seen a frame in person, but have heard phenomenal things about the ride. Without knowing the history of the frame, looks like you practically stole the thing. Also looks to be close to my size, I'd be willing to steal it from you if you're ever interested.

Considering all the trouble you're going through on Broadway, I think you deserve some good luck for a change. ;)

I just told my wife about the bike
After showing her page 86 of the custom bikes book.
She really thinks I should go with the matching wheels, too!

Oh dude, you scored. For how little you have in it, you might as well buy those wheels.

It will look so good!

If you decide to sell it, I will take it off your hands for $50...

i just sent a pm about the wheels...
he seems like a very reasonable guy
and famous around wisconsin!
i've really enjoyed getting to know him
over the last couple days...
he just rides fixed/single speed
and is on a pugsley only racing team!
he sent pics of his racing team from this year
and the custom red pugsley he was riding...
he's crazier about riding than i am, it seems!

you're not selling off the llew are you?? my favorite bike on this board!!??

but my daughter is convinced llew is her graduation present
since she's developed such a love for riding fixed
and is exactly the same height/frame size
...she keeps reminding me SHE
is the one who studied in australia for a semester last spring!
:bike:

well, mr squirrel...by now you probably know
the nutcracker is sold out
and you'll just need to eat thistle
from the bird feeder!
sorry

400 frn ???? :hello:

sometimes i wonder if my favorite bike
is my favorite bike
because of my favorite tape???
strong work
--that means it's made???--
i may get so motivated to ride it
i'll build it and try the zip tie trick
and ride it asap in the snow/on the ice
...not sure i've ever bought more bike for the money...

to find the ups man had delivered my 'payback for participation'
and placed these two boxes in my front hall.
the DW fixie is in the house!
...now what...
wait for my friends to come over and open the box
or do i wait for christmas
and the cranks, bb and bartape to arrive???
--clydesdale, i'll wait til you have a moment--
are you there???

spiderman
12-19-2010, 12:55 AM
i couldn't resist opening the DW!
it's really quite a wonderful bike!
i just put it back together
and used a 46t crankset and chain
i had running my terraplane as a single speed...
seems to run nice and smooth
in the basement on rollers
but the forecast for tomorrow is for more snow.
the rear clearance is perfect for the zip tie trick
the front end not so much...but feel i need the brake up front anyway.
the brakes are reversed
so that will be interesting to try.
i may just zip the ties off
and drive to some relatively dry pavement
for a more proper test spin tomorrow...
we'll see what the day brings.
thanks for the encouraging words!
this should be great fun
spidey
oh, and the seat mast with the brooks saddle
and post included in the sale...
exactly 77 cm
...right where i'm riding llew...

And the contents aren't too bad either.
We all look forward to hearing about your maiden voyage.

You'll never have time to ride the OttRott anymore. I'll give you $500 for it, makes you whole on the new ride. I'm coming to Iowa on Christmas eve, I can swing by and pick it up. ;)

Just trying to help out, that's the kind of generous guy I am.

Nothing like a new bike to get you out in the snow.
Good Luck.

PS: Don Walker is also the founder and president of NAHBS and judging by
how little self promotion he does, he must be some cool hombre.

I can absolve you of your guilt by allowing you to sell to me your Serotta ti S&S bike for $400. You will feel so much better for it, trust me. :)

...and, what's with the rear wheel zip ties? I don't get it.

Even Spiderman needs some Snow Traction.

Even Spiderman needs some Snow Traction.

...but the idea was posted in the i love winter riding thread...
so i thought i'd give it a try.
they lasted a total of 5 blocks
on ice and snow packed roads.
oh well,
they did make me more confident thinking they were there
until clydesdale told me mid-ride that i'd lost them all.
i had been complaining about how noisy the bike sounded--
the zip ties have an almost musical quality
when they pop off, grind through the drivetrain
and get spit out on the road.
...unfortunately, mr squirrel
they are hard for me to find in the snow
and i'm concerned that you'll find them
and think they're pretty good eating!
