There was quite a controversy about the true validity of this bike, but is the final price the true story?

The man made 135 bikes. How many Serottas are there?

You do the math.

So if I make one frame will mine be worth even more?

Depends on how many people you can dupe into thinking that you know what you're doing.

You'd probably have to off yourself for it to really climb in value though. No one's gonna pay top dollar when they know you *could* make another one.

You need to stop making wheels then die tomorrow. Perhaps then a dented Ergott wheel will be worth $1000.

Since I don't own any of your wheels I won't be rooting for your untimely death, but if I were you I'd be careful doing a fast hilly ride with guys who do own some of your stuff.

Too many Serottas made for the vintage bikes to gain much. Colnago built many more but kept the brand value intact somehow. Cinelli missed the boat: They should be on top of the heap for anything they ever made, IMO.

I'm with Rugby. I never understood the wanting to have something because it was "rare" thing. I guess I buy things to use and keep, not to speculate. For that price you could have 10 nice used Serottas, and a lot more fun with them.

It's art, embodied in a bike.

Yeah, Van Gogh paintings don't "do" anything better than a blank wall either. Or Picassos. etc. etc.

I hope this was a joke

OK point taken. I've never been close to one, and can't really assess how much more artful it is compared to other nicely made bikes. I think much of the price still has to be attributed to rarity, rather than intrinsic characteristics.

two points,

1. you think they could have thrown in shipping for $10k...

2. do you think many people would be that surprised if a Sachs was selling for that much? And he made a lot more than 135 bikes...

just something to ponder... but, yeah $10k is pretty out there...

I am no bike historian, but the guy made 135 bikes under his own brand.... but I believe he made quite a few more than that before striking out on his own.

I will confess I had never heard of this builder until about 18 months ago, when one of his frames came up for sale and sold for $8,000-ish, as I remember.

Lots of to-ing and fro-ing on the Internets about what his frames are "worth;" my economics textbook tells me they are "worth" whatever a willing buyer and seller agree on. eBay is as good a place as any to strike a deal.

In any case, there was a very interesting blog about him, here it is. Worth reading:

liberace is not the buyer of the $10000 confente.
he's the buyer of a $1000 confente from craigslist...of which the bike is now for auction on ebay and will probably sell for around 10k as well.

My fault, that's for clearing. :)
