I notice that many sites I surf to take quite some time to load. I have a fastish DSL connection and an XP oldish computer. But I can never tell if it is my cpu, DSL, or mostly that tons of sites are have challenged bandwidth, too much graphics, too much animation or what.

Do I need a technology upgrade or is the nature of the net that many sites can't serve up the pages fast enough?

Lots of sites go a bit too gung-ho on the javascript / flash / other bandwidth intensive stuff without any thought of optimization.

I wouldn't worry about it too much on your end.

You can use this to run a speed test. If your speed is less than 1000
kbps and you do have a premium DSL sla you could have a equipment problem.

My modem went out recently and I did really let it bother me for about 1 month since I have a fast connection at work.

I was using the same DSL modem for about 9 years. Grey colored Westell.
The biggest symptom was downloading YouTube videos. What used to
take less than 5-10 secs. went over 2 mins.

BTW you want to talk about old. I am using a computer with Windows
2k. Its only used for surfing the net. It works really well.

How often do you reboot your modem and/or router?

I know little about Windows BECAUSE I OWN A TROUBLE-FREE MAC!

Anyway, it seems my relatives think I can fix what ails their Windows PC. One relative's XP machine was running dog slow on the 'net. I tried what I could and talked to our resident geeks and network gurus at work. They both insisted it was the Norton anti-virus bogging down the system. I tried to convince her to have a PC specialist look at her computer and tune it up. Instead, she threw her money at a new computer.

You could try a System Restore, but be sure and back up all your files first.
