I was on track to beat last year's 14,845 miles mark before the "unattentive" driver took me out on 16 SEP. I am over the 10k mark but unsure how much.

I commute as much as possible on my road bike in full gear (one file cabinet drawl is full of work clothes). What is by car 24-mile round trip I turned into 50-70 miles daily. Great stress reliever!

I am horrible at tracking things so I don't even try. It is all I can do to get out the door for a ride.

I've probably got about 2K miles for the year, mostly commuting. I've had more than 10K miles per year for the last 5 or 6 years but a 20 month old and a second on the way in the next couple of weeks has eaten in to bike time but I wouldn't have it any other way. I'll ride again when the don't want to hang around with me anymore.

My cycling experience got even better when I took the computers off all my bikes.
I don't even ride with a watch.
Having said that, I am going to guess about 2500 miles this year which is a little less than usual but having 3 kids under age 3 will do that, or so I have heard!

Change the Cateye battery and zero the odometer at the end of the year.

In December 2009, I removed all computers and measurement devices from my bikes. This, year, I commuted more than 200 days by bike, raced a cross season, and did a variety of other organized and non-organized rides. I have no idea how far or how fast I rode, how many watts were generated, or feet of altitude gained. I must say it was probably my most enjoyable year of riding yet.

Texas is not as flat as you think once you get away from the coast; however, it's nothing compared to Colorado.

so far this year: in Texas, over 3,000
in Colorado, approx 400

I may have ridden over 4,000; often, I leave the computer off, including yesterday (at least 30).

The wind should account for at least an extra 10%.

4,321 as of today, a new annual record for me, beating last year's 4,265. Trying for a total of 4,500 this year. Of course this year's total includes 732 miles on the trainer and last year's total included 794 trainer miles. Some would argue trainer miles don't count since I didn't go anywhere, but that's the case with almost all my rides which end at the same place they begin!

I didn't count the coffee and danish stops, which were plentiful, but can definitely say there were no ice cream stops. Will have to set a goal for some of those for next year.

I write the odo settings down on each of my bikes at the beginning/end of each year and keep an Excel file as a log with mileage by ride by bike throughout the year.

I feel kind of guilty. 11350 so far (not counting the cross bike) is actually down from last year (12381 road miles according to my computer). I'm a fencing coach and have most mornings free. I am 55 years old and did my first race in the 70's. Still race a few times a year, well truth is not every year but still trying. I would guess that 65% of those miles are fairly flat. The rest are on the Blue Ridge parkway or in Vermont. I may not be the smartest guy out there but I did marry well. She puts up with way to much

Nothing official yet. At last check, approx. a month ago -- coming up on 6,000 miles. Will likely end up close to 7,000 miles by end of December. Only riding about 4 days a week, and fewer miles per day, since I'm also lifting weight 3 days per week.

5600 or so.

My informal goal was 5200, but am pretty close to 6,000 and still riding in the winter rain (commuting and weekends).

I tell myself that mileage goals are stupid but last year I was at 5,980 after my last ride of the year....went home, ate dinner, charged up the batteries on my lights and did a quick 20 miles at midnight just to "round it off" at 6,000.

I guess I am somewhere in the 2k+ range. It is hard with little tykes... but I also have been lifting 1-2 hours 4-5 days a week, and running as well. Time is the limiting factor. :crap:

5200, expect to finish the season out at about 5600, my plan was to break 5k so I'm happy with it. Happily lastnight 29 deg and a stiff headwind felt fine and I was under-dressed, so feeling ok about this winter.

I'm on a fiscal year for mileage that began 10/1/09. Fiscal because that's when I spent what I thought was a lot of money for a used bike & began riding. I racked up around 4,200 miles during the first year and felt pretty good doing it. Turned 64 during the year & got in good enough shape to handle most of the hills where I live. Have to say I don't regret buying the bike....it was a great year!

Hey Russ:

Congrats on the bike and getting into riding! 4600 is a good year no matter how long you've been riding. For year #1 it is outstanding.

That said, I committed to riding 1,000 more miles then my 2300 in 2009 and I am right now at 3325 or so. I have a few weeks left and would expect another 150-200 depending on the weather. No commuting for me. The 3 miles to work is too short to make it worth it. Okay, tar and feather me already! :)

A little over 5500 heading to 6000 by year end.

Had a tough summer - let the heat get to me this summer. Five months May to September only 1368 miles.

Did a great job night riding and riding in colder weather (for me) in the winter.

Hey, I like that! Actual miles at end of year are 4424, and 132 rides. Five centuries. Split between 4 bikes, with my one-year-old-to-me Serotta Fierte IT getting the nod for about 1900 miles and a Look 481 seeing about 1300 miles on the road.

Rode about 1800 of those miles with my wife, including three centuries with her. :)

Some would argue trainer miles don't count since I didn't go anywhere

I think most folks who make that arguement say trainer miles don't count because they don't cover any distance, not because you didn't go anywhere.

It's a semantic quibble, really: "Miles" (or "kilometers") are a unit of measurement for quantifying distances. If everyone was comparing their Yearend Total Revolutions Of The Crankset, or Yearend Total Hours On The Bike, there probably wouldn't be any "Trainers don't count!" arguements.

As someone who rides a fixed gear all winter and keeps going lower in gearing, I think we need to change how we quantify how much we ride. In winter riding I think we should go by number of holes worn in the seat of your tights.

Can everyone identify the state they live in and are they all road miles vs trainer? I am just being selfish thinking of the fact that here in NH it is 19 degrees and the sun sets so early I cant think of any more possibility of riding this year. I can clock in for 2400 miles from late March to early November....

At least over 70,000 flight miles.... 80-90 hotel nights.....

2016.5 miles as of today. Looks like I'll be able to get out Friday afternoon (temps in the low 50's in the forecast). Probably finish out the year at 2100 or so.

Unless I decide to go crazy, I'll not break my record of 6,210 set last year.

Barring illness or injury, I should hit 6,000 miles by the end of the year. Given that I missed a full six weeks of commuting due to work related travel, I'm okay with my 2010 riding.

My miles are divided among several bikes.

Look 585 1580 miles
Waterford (fixed) 1730 miles
Pegoretti 1613 miles
The tandem 752 miles

Last year, I rode a few hundred miles on the mountain bike...this spring I started riding on the road...got around 4,200 miles in since May, with a few hundred more on rollers. It's going to be a long winter on those rollers...I hate them already :(

Probably have only 150 miles on the MTB this year...too much trouble to drive the 35 miles to the trails.

Oh, and I'm in NC...winters aren't bad, but I'm a wimp when it comes to riding in 45 degrees or colder...guess I need to invest in cold weather gear.

I'll fess up.... After taking 5+ years off the bike due to a chunky bone spur in my C6 that makes my arm go numb after a longer ride, I reconfigured my handle bar/stem setup and can now ride for an hour! The Dr's said I would never be able to ride pain free. HA!

Since getting back on the bike in October, I've racked up about 350 miles. Not much for most of the gear mashers here (what you guys do over a short weekend) but for me it was a rebirth! Unfortunately not. I went to get out of bed at 8, felt the air temp, looked back at my fiance, and crawled back under the sheets. I only had a brief window of opportunity to get out before we started cooking a pre-thanksgiving feast, and my desire to be warm and comfortable took over.

Next time I'm down, though, I'll try and plan this more in advance...

I'm impressed with the numbers listed here. I suspect that normal people like me are too embarrassed to list their totals and we are only seeing the exceptional riders. For me, I'm looking for excuses to make me feel better about my paltry amount.

I'm 51 and did 2,000 miles in 2010. I live in Missouri and basically little to no riding in Nov-Feb so most (95%) of the riding is in 8 months. This is the first year I kept track and it wasn't a great year (travel?) which would be more like 2,500. In MO we have rolling hills (not much drafting) and the summer is hot and excessively humid. A typical ride average is 15.5 mph unless we ride in the floodplains where it is flat and can average closer to 20mph but I had no such rides this year. The avg ride is about 40miles. So 2010 was about ~50 (2000/40) rides and ~130hrs (2000/15.5) of exercise & fun.

Live in NYC, so the math is a little NYC specific. Let's see....a few hundred times around Central Park, plus a whole lot of laps of Prospect Park, add a hundred or so really long bridge crossings, then throw in a few trips to Nyack, plus a whole lotta Kissena Velodrome ovals..... A few thousand? Don't follow mileage, but know it's not enough!

Hey wait, I'm a track rider...can't I convert to metric and multiply by 1.6?

Cheers

Stayed injury free this year and rode just over 10,000km. Mostly commuting to work and training, plus one 1300km loaded tour over a ten day period, Montreal-Hamilton-Montreal. :)

Cheers

I'm curious...from somebody who rides 2 lane highways out in the country most of the time, what's it like riding in Central Park? How many miles around the park is it? Are there lots of other cyclists...walkers...runners? I would guess it's the best riding around considering where you're at but how does it compare with being out among the corn fields or rolling hills?

hi, nyc is a great cycling scene, thousands of riders and racers. central park is one continuous 6.1 mile rolling hill, with one flat section .25 mile and that's it. it's beautiful. prospect park is about 3.1 miles around, same thing, all rolling hills.

the big thing in nyc is to avoid the one million tourists...so you try to ride when and where they are not.

i'm originally from wisconsin-- southeast wisconsin (milwaukee and madison). in the early 80's to the late 80's i rode the rolling hills. you could go a few miles out of town and then ride for an hour and see 3 cars, 4 tractors, and 2 trucks in that 60 minutes.

funny thing, i was just speaking tonite with a racer who(who used to race back then) and he mentioned the same thing about how easy it was back then with so many fewer cars!

Somewhere around 4500 mi.
Still have a couple of weeks left, but probably will not make the 5000 goal.
But then I think my cyclocomputer was messed up for a month.
Yeah, yeah, that's what happened, my cyclocomputer kept turning off...

Nearly 4 more weeks of riding left in 2010 according to my calendar! I'll get back to you on January 1st.

...of course, now this blizzard may have succeeded in cutting my month short by a week. But I'm determined to get at least one more ride in before 2011, even if it kills me!

Reached the annual goal of 5,000 last Sunday. With cooperation from the weather gods, 5,200 should be attainable. Skipped this AM due to high winds. Temperature drop into the low 30's is forecasted tomorrow and as one might imagine, no one goes outside when this happens in Southeastern Florida except for our Canadian snowbirds!

I was thinking I would hit 10,000 this year but I will be a little short at about 9,600 miles. About 85% of riding was in the Mountains and gaining 2,000 feet + per ride. Although, I have not added them all up, my hours are well over 800.

. . . absolutely pitiful. 2297 miles after doing just over 5000 in 2009.

I worked at the gym till the end of June and working that crazy schedule (in M-W-F at 5am), leading three spin classes a week, and doing weight workouts for gym PR purposes absolutely killed me--I had nothing left to go ride outside and get in proper riding shape. :crap:

Then after working like a madman to get my form, crashed August 26, broke my neck, and was back off the bike for almost a month. Spent the rest of the season just trying to keep any kind of fitness for distance riding. :crap: :crap:

I know for some people 2300 miles would be good, but I'm just sitting here kicking myself, doing spin classes, and making plans for this next year when I have a regular job with a regular schedule and am older and wiser and just grateful to be alive and not paralyzed. Sigh . . .

I hear you Dave.

I've logged 4500 outdoor and 700 indoor after riding 6500 last year.

Life, accidents, etc. all sometimes get in the way. Hopefully, we've all enjoyed the miles we've done (well, maybe not the neck-breaking ride....).

Here's wishing everyone a happy, healthy, safe, New Year with wishes for more miles next season (if that's your goal).

I was aiming for 8000 but fell short with 7869. In 2009, I aimed for 7000 and also fell short with 6901. Frankly, I don't mind falling short and I suppose I could aim for 9000 in 2011 and fall a little short again. Frankly, I'm not sure 9000 will be more fun than 8000.

This was my first year riding again since 1990. Put somewhere around 4,500. Hard to say as one bike I use occasionally doesn't have a computer.

Going to ride with a good friend of mine tomorrow who is a local legend in the So Cal racing scene. I used to put in three times the miles he did when I raced, but I could never come close to beating him. He stopped riding for about 5 years and gained about 30 pounds. I took him out for a ride on his first week back riding in mid October and he was very out of shape. He hasn't wanted to ride with me since then and has been training consistently since then doing long base miles. We'll see what's what tomorrow.

Happy New Year every one!

Okay, now it's the end of the year! Just came back from a nice (well, relatively speaking; tons of slush & ice all over the roads, boo!) ride to celebrate the last day of December and to tack on a few gratuitous miles to my yearend total.

7,854 miles. All on the road. Apparently that included >200,000' of climbing (my wife only got the altimeter in May, and we didn't do every ride together, so it may well be closer to 300,000'). No idea how many hours.

Or how many beers. Let's just say lots.

living here my whole life, CP gets boring, PP gets boring even faster. the two notable rides I do are from my place in brooklyn (near coney island) to nyack, that's a good 80 miles round trip or so. and my place to point lookout on long beach island, about 60 miles round trip depending on the path. but having done those routes so many times, they're starting to get boring too. there aren't too many SAFE riding options in NYC. I work with what I have.

i stopped logging miles in June, but i'd say i put in about 2000 this year. a few bad crashes sidelined me for a while.

"Trainer miles"? A "mile" is a measure of distance, trainer's don't go anywhere!

:)

Wouldn't trainer hours be the more appropriate measure for those unfortunate enough to have to use them?

And as we say on Thursday, beer miles (ie those distances ridden to and from an establishment that serves malted beverages) count double.

I didn't equal 2009's total, but still managed my second best riding year in 2010, 6,060 miles for the year.

Waterford-fixed gear- 1,828
Look 585- 1,822
Pegoretti Marcelo- 1.658

I also track miles where I used a bike instead of a car, (i.e. commuting, running to the video store, or Walgreens, etc.) Last year, I decreased my car use by 1,452 miles.

Bob Ross

Wouldn't trainer hours be the more appropriate measure for those unfortunate enough to have to use them?

Exactly. It's a semantic issue, really: If you keep track of hours, or effort, or revolutions of the crank, then time on the trainer absolutely does count. It's only when counting miles or kilometers that it doesn't.

And as we say on Thursday, beer miles (ie those distances ridden to and from an establishment that serves malted beverages) count double.

Now there's an idea I can get behind!

He is a HILL monster and has no slow speeds. His training this year has really been beneficial and those miles were mostly HARD training miles. OK. I under estimated earlier in this thread,, but here's the final:

6,018 miles for the year.

I ended up riding way less in December than I had anticipated. Had one week of really frigid temps and my indoor trainer blew up. I did get a new trainer for Christmas :D

Have ridden every day this year, except one. Lovin' the new Kurt Kinetic Road Machine.

Hopefully, my work schedule will cooperate better this coming year than it did last year. OH ! And I got my NEW EC90 SL rear (replacement) wheel from Easton -- so I'm ready to go when the weather gets a little better.

Good luck to all, this year.
