I'm overjoyed to report that I am now the proud owner of a pair of double 180mm TA Zephyr crank arms with a 110bcd. Going to try these on my cross/commuter bike.

Question though - one google page tells me I need a Campy Taper, another tells me Shimano, many people just throw up their hands an go with Phil Wood.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

Thanks!

i think i have a couple of actual TA cartridge BBs that will work with these.

let me know if you're interested and i'll dig them out and give you the details.

Yep, that is exactly what I did when those cranks were mine - threw my hands up and went with Phil!

Peter White Cycles might have the info you need: http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/bottombrackets.asp and here: http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/zephyrlight.asp scroll through the whole page and hopefully you can find what you need.

Looks like I need a 116? Can anyone confirm that?

Yes....but which Phil? ISO or ISIS taper? Knowing length is only part of it.

Not ISIS. It would be ISO or JIS...that's the next question.

Thanks Don. Since this is an experiment in crank length, I don't want to drop a hundred bucks on a BB. Going to have to find something a little more generic.

Call Velo Orange, they have a good number of Square taper for a good price and I am sure they could provide some guidance as far as size.

Best of luck.

116mm if fairly normal sized stays..longer if fat stays. ISO, BTW...saying 'go Phil Wood', is OK but they have ISO and JIS tapers on their BBs.

FYI: if you read the end of PW's page listed above, you will see that TA changed the taper on the Zepher during its run. I can confirm this as I have an older one that takes a 116 and a new one that needs a 122, (both TA BB's).

i may be wrong, but i own three ta zephyr cranksets and purchased the cranksets and the philwood bb's from peter white. one bb is a 116 jis, and the other two are 119 jis ( less clearance). they fit perfectly and have never creaked or come loose.

Maybe I'd believe what Peter White said if he wasn't so hard to talk to. Not thrilled at being yelled at over the phone..THAT won't happen again. BUT he does give misinformation out that confused one of my customers. That led to a shouting match on the phone..unprovoked by me, he just went nutz....about Centaur hubs.

You mean it isn't part of your business plan to berate and insult your potential customers? Thats crazy talk. :)

TA claims their spindles are JIS, then TA claims their pedals worked
with french and english threading at one point. Is Shimano JIS the
same as TA JIS ????

I have a Zephyr from 2005, used the PJW recommended spindle, works
fine, not bottomed out, clears BB etc, TA BB.

check the back of your crankarms. if there is a small box engraved with k6 or j9 or whatever, they are jis. some earlier zephyrs were iso. fortunately for me, all mine are jis.
