View Full Version : Sweat Guard recommendation

Since they weather has turned and I am doing some serious trainer time I am looking for a sweat guard that I can use on rollers.

I have never used one but I could use one now for sure. I usually use a fan but with the colder temps I am keeping the heat down in the garage (yes I said that) to save money so I am riding in about 50 degree temps.

This is no problem but without air moving I sweat a lot but it is cold enough the fan would give me a chill. My frame is carbon so that is not a big deal but dropping on the headset etc is not good.

Thanks,

Stephen

Sorry, I couldn't resist. ;)

Your question really needs more info, i.e. where do you sweat from? Headbands/wristbands like what basketball/tennis players wear actually do work, despite them being somewhat goofy looking (but beauty is in the eye of the beholder).

50 degrees doesn't seem too cold to use a fan especially if you're sweating as much as you are. You'll work through the chill.

I haven't used these but I've heard good things about Halo Sweatbands. (http://store.haloheadband.com/)

If you sweat anything like I do, I think trying to keep the sweat contained on your head/body is a lost cause. That is unless you constantly wipe yourself down with a terry towel. Tried the Sweat Gutr, Halo, Headsweats. These don't even work that well when riding outdoors. Indoors, forget it...it's worse. Puddles develop on the mat after 12 minutes or so. Was thinking about trying out something like this to keep the sweat off the bike while on the trainer. Seems like it could work.

I was on the rollers in my garage last night.

My water bottle was freezing up.

Turn on the fan, your body should be working to build muscle tone, not get rid of latent heat.

By sweat guard I presume you mean one that affixes to the bike.

I wear a Sweatvac skull cap, and install a Blackburn Sweat Net between the handlebars and seat-you can still ride roller with this attached.

After training, I wipe the frame down with a damp, terrycloth rag cut from an old towel.

I've actually ridden rollers outside in 20 degree temps. You still sweat up a storm and will strip down to your baselayer.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I am going to start with the performance bike sweat guard for the bike.

I may try the fan again. The problem is that even with the fan I will sweat and then the fan blowing feels too cold. I could dress more with and add ear covers.

I am changing my clothes every 90 minutes and that helps and I have a bath size towel to dry my head too.

Good for you for being determined to make it work. When it comes to indoor or garage training sessions it seems most people would bail long before considering a change of clothes.

I have the Performance sweatguard thingie. Clearly designed for trainer, not roller use.

I found that when I set it up to be nice and tight, not sagging, I lost ability to steer the bars. Now, I did first try it a few yrs ago when I was a relative roller newbie, so maybe now it could work... but I kinda doubt it.

I'll give you a heck of a deal on a very lightly used one... :D

I ride in the garage, door open. I use a towel, and slowly shed clothing as I heat up. Now, now... let's keep it clean here...

I'm stuck indoors (no garage, live in an apartment) so I keep it simple to stay cool. Riding in bibs and HRM strap only, fan on, and when the landlord cranks the heat (not that they ever do :( ) i'll open the window and let the fan pull in the cold air. No sense in sweating up a jersey while you're riding in the comfort of your own home.

Oh, and a terry towel next to me to wipe myself and the bike as necessary.

I recommend Stanley High-Velocity Blower Fan (http://www.amazon.com/Lasko-655702-Stanley-High-Velocity-BlowerFan/dp/B0001BJDUQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=hi&qid=1291052710&sr=8-1). This fan directs concentrated air where you want it and it really kicks some hind... it would be nice if it came with a remote control though. Nice fan to have in summer time when working in your garage/work shop as well.

Oh I also wear Head Sweat's coolmax(?) mesh cycling cap (I have a bunch that I normally wear under my helmet... these are softer than regular caps) or assos headbands... don't know how effective these are compared to others but works for me (other ones I tried just don't stay on my head to my liking with all my hair, big noggin and all).

And I also use the Performance sweat guard thingie too sometimes... on my trainer, that is.

Thank you very much. Everyone needs a pat on the back and today was a one of those days :crap:

The 90 minutes was really for a quick snack and pee break but a change of clothes when you are soaked is very very nice.

Those little 5 minute breaks make a huge huge difference. You just need to get to 90 minutes. Easy. Then the next 90.

Thanks for the fan linky. I am a freak about fans - I just love them. I sleep with one on 365 days and almost feel strange without one running. So that fan may be a new must have for me

I really like the idea of a remote control fan so that is a direction I am going to look.

Here is one though not exactly the same brand as mine (mines are Enviracaire) but looks pretty much the same: http://www.amazon.com/Honeywell-Fresh-Breeze-Remote-Control/dp/B000E13ERQ/ref=pd_sim_dbs_k_2

I have a couple of these with remote (really convenient); one in my bedroom and one in living room by my couch and trainer set up. These are not as strong but they come in very handy. I wish Stanley one have remote but I'm thinking of setting it up with my extra Christmas light remote control so I can at least turn it on and off without having to get off the bike every time.

For example I sweat a lot when I come out of shower so fans are a must even in winter time and I have my share of fans placed strategically through out my house. :)
