I live in the heartland of Michigan and will have to subjugate myself to 3 months of black ice with in the next 3-4 weeks for my commute to work (6 mi). I've seen lots of studded tires on the market and lots of DIY instructions. What are the advantages to both? Anyone had any experience commuting on home made or brand name :help:?

Don't buy the Kenda cheapies - splurge for the Nokian or Schwalbe tires. Thank me later.

Homemade studs can work, but I like the peace of mind that comes with my Nokians.

Just buy a set.

I commuted for 2 years on the Kenda Klondikes. I also have Nokians on my mountain bike. I couldn't tell you that one worked better than the other.

Is the stud count a big factor for rolling resistance/wear when I don't have ice conditions? there is a pair of 204 Nokians for sale on my local forum and I see extremes have 294 are the 90 extra studs worth the additional cost?

I saw some innovas Im guessing that they are junk?

Great pic - I've had nokians on my bleriot - they work great on glare ice - I did go down hard last January over some rutted ice - but one fall in 4 years isn't that bad is it?

FWIW, I've used the Nokian Gazza extreme 29er for 3 years with nothing but good reviews. I originally bought them to prevent the otherwise inevitable trip to the emergency room. Never have had one slip. Lost a total of 5 or so studs over the years, probably my fault from riding on bare ground occasionally early in the winter. No experience with any other studded tires-- I got these because they were so highly recommended. Spendy, but probably a lifetime purchase if you take care of them.
