SPRING LAKE — A Freehold-based attorney pleaded guilty to animal cruelty after his wife turned him in for using a "Havahart" trap to capture squirrels then drowning the animals in their backyard fountain pond, authorities said.

Edward F. Colrick, 62, of Atlantic Avenue, pleaded guilty to the animal cruelty charge on Tuesday in Spring Lake Heights municipal court, where Judge George C. Pappas fined him $2,500 and ordered him to cease trapping animals, said Victor "Buddy" Amato, chief law enforcement officer for the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals...

[pause] Was that wrong? Should I not have done that? I tell you, I gotta plead ignorence on this thing, because if anyone had said anything to me at all when I first started here that that sort of thing is frowned upon...

PS: Even though I detest squirrels, killing them isn't cool...unless you're hunting for food and you're into that sort of thing.

My grandfather was a surly, alcoholic, literally right off the boat from Poland.

When I was a kid in the 60's/70's, there was a "neighborhood" squirrel that human neighbors took a fancy to feeding, and named Pete.

"Dziadzio" (Polish for grandfather), loved his garden, but not the squirrels that frolicked in it. He too, had a Have-a-heart trap. Dziadzio caught Pete one day and as was common practice with prior prisoners, Dziadzio put Pete in a burlap bag and beat him against a concrete wall.

Well, the neighbors caught wind of this and needless to say, this did not improve Dziadio's popularity.

Only in New Jersey would someone be fined for this. Sounds like it was more of a domestic dispute than cruelty to animals. Read the book "The Perfect Storm" it goes through the science behind drowning and it is pretty humaine.

NJ should focus on fining companies for pollution, or for hosting "the Jersey Shore".
