Novice Mountain Bike Crank Question

I have seen a decent amount of the SRAM 2x10 set-ups around here.

I am considering building a mountain bike to use during this winter, and would prefer two to three chainrings up front. I am even considering only 1.

Is there anything that would speak against purchasing a SRAM crankset to go with a Shimano 9 great set-up I already have? Will there be any compatibility issues?

Is there anyone out there running 2x9? How do you have it set up?

the sram crankset will work with any drivetrain.
