old tires - now what?

what do you guys do with used tires?

funny you should ask that.

every old tire i've ever put on the curb - these are bad, chords showing, some dry rotting, literally falling apart stuff, i dont get rid of tires until they're dead.

i lean them against a tree at my curbside, and someone takes them, not the garbage pick-up, some private individual, they must be worth something to someone, and more power to them.

that said, most towns around here have recycling for car tires, and they'll pick up at your house, they should take bike tires for recycling too.

I section them to see how thin they really were, cut out a few inches to bring in to work to show my cycling buddies and toss out the rest with the trash.

Is cutting and carrying a small section on the bike good for severe tire blowouts and flats? I have heard of this but never met anyone who actually employed the strategy.

Cut off the beads and you have a tire boot. I usually use old squared off tires for the trainer. Old tires and tubes that can't be repaired also make for good bungee cord replacements when securing the bikes on the rack.
