While I have them off the bike I figure I may as well service them. Any suggestions? I read somewhere to douse the mechanisms with WD-40. Good or bad idea? What's the best way to lube them afterwards, and with what?

Remember that WD-40 is a solvent, not a lubricant. I spray them with ProLink sprat lube, cleans and lubs. No other 'service' possible. I call it 'STI Repair Kit', sometimes works, sometimes doesn't(like yesterday with some 6500 shifters, goodbye RH one).

I blow them out with compressed air to remove dust/dirt. Then flood them with the spray lube until it runs out freely. It's freed up a sticky inner lever for me a couple of times.

flush with WD-40, let dry, spray in quality spray lube of your choice.

Careful with the WD40. The brifters are assembled at the factory with grease, and the WD40 can flush it out. If the bike is shifting well, don't do a thing.

So don't even try to re-lube them? They are shifting okay, this is more preventive maintenance than anything...
