today was a glorious day in NJ, 60ish degrees, sunny, perfect weather for a bike ride, so i went out and got about 40 comfortable miles in.

along one rough stretch of road, i lost my tail light. i normally keep it clipped to a loop on my saddle bag, but it bounced its way off. this is the second light this has happened to. as bad luck would have it, it bounced off, into the middle of the street and was promptly run over by a SUV. another one bites the dust...

as you can see in the pic below, i'm not running a lot of seatpost at all on this bike, i would like to use a secure mounting system. i've seen some other forum members bikes with seat-stay light mounts, but i dont know which light would have these, and how they work, maybe thats my solution? maybe a light with a much stronger clip for the seat bag mount. maybe a jerry rigged zip tie or elastic to keep the clip closed?

someone help me :help:

Not sure about your light question, but I have a question about the position of your handlebars. How do you get your hands to be comfortable on the drops with them pointing at that peculiar angle? Just askin'

i've experimented a lot with the bar angles, and really like the way they are set up here, just seems to work for me. with these compact drop bars, i spend >75% of the time in the drops too. this bike is set up so perfectly for me, i can ride it for hours with zero pain or discomfort.

i do agree, it looks strange, buy i cant argue with success

AngryScientist,

This tail light is very bright, has blinky and solid modes. Comes with seat post and seat stay mounts. Has a clip so you can also clip it on anything with a loop (seat bag, jacket, vest, etc.). I have one on every bike.

Put a rubber band tightly around the light and clip after mounting and never lose another one.

I would use a twist tie.

Look at Portland Design Works Radbot 1000 and Danger Zone models. Both are twice as bright as a Superflash.

I've lost the same number of taillights you have, because they've bounced past the strap on the back of the seat bag.

After the first loss, I tried cutting the strap in half and stitching some thicker material behind it. Looked like crap and I still lost another taillight.

What HAS worked was sticking a small piece of adhesive backed Velcro hook material behind the clip, right near the end. It increases tension on the clip itself and the hook material provides a rough surface which is less likely to slip past the little strap on the seat bag.

The tail lights with clips (like PB superflash) I just attach it to my helmet (Giro Atmos). I find that location to be very snug, the adjustment strap is wider and stronger than the loop on a saddle bag.

Then on the seatpost, I wrap a Knog there. Those refuse to fall.

Hey ! Velcro ! that's a pretty good idea! I have been using some clear packing tape.

I'll try that!

I like the knog silicone tail light. I use the frog one which is a single led but very bright. It straps on securely and I haven't lost one yet.

very good looking bike!
those seat stays are very shapely as well.

a seat stay mount would work well on your bike.
i had the same problem with a short seat post and a large bag.
lost couple of lights and worried about inconsistent visibility.
the seat stay mount is solid, no worries.
the planet bike light is also very bright.

Light and Motion Vis 180. Expensive but much brighter than the typical blinky and its rechargeable.

I lost a new light in the first 30 minutes of a ride a few years back it was really frustrating. I've been using a Flea ever since and the bugger seems to hold tight regardless of the bumps. I like the fact that I can recharge it through the USB on my laptop as well.

The swerve will mount nicely on your seat stay. It is a very bright light.

The Planet Bike Superflash has a really stout clip. It's almost painful to open. Mine hasn't fallen off in 2000 miles on my Fizik pack.

Also, you get 100+ hours on 2AAA.
