Do I have to give up my 10 speed crankset if I move to 11 speed?? I wasn't sure if the 11 speed change is too narrow for the 10 speed chainrings???

I've worked with several people, myself included (7 speed crank, 10 speed drivetrain), riding cranks designed for wider chains that what they're running. Never heard of a problem.

I'm running a 10 speed setup with a 5 speed crank (TA). It works, but shifting is sluggish.

I guess my point is that you can get away with a lot up front when it comes to cranks.

What about front derailleurs? can I run a 10 speed Compact FD with an 11 speed compact crankset? I'd like to keep the FD on the DeSalvo as it uses a 28.6 clamp and I'm pretty sure the 11 speed offerings don't come in that clamp size.

The 11 speed teeth are about .1mm or .004 inch thinner, so it may have an effect if you like to ignore the standard advice to avoid the big/big combo. Other than that, it will work fine.

A 10 speed FD will work too. There a have been a few back and forth changes in the exact amount of cable pull required for different FDs, but the ultrashift levers can actuate any double FD with either 3 or 4 clicks.

An 11 speed FD only requires 3 clicks and has no trim click from the big ring if setup this way. On most frames you can use the big/big with no chain rub, so no trim click from the big ring is needed.

No. I have had a 10s Record crank on my Moots Chorus 11s demo bike for almost 2 years w/o any problems whatsoever.
