Gonna build up my Surly CrossCheck as a cold weather/CX/touring allrounder. Now my dilemma, one of two builds

1. Campy triple (old Victory 28,38,50) with downtube shifters and one of several 7 and 8 speed wheelset combos, including Mavic sewups. The campy stuff is in real nice shape....or...

2. Shimano 9 speed 105 with a xt rear derailler, 11-32 cogset and a lx crank with 36,48. the Shimano is off some other bikes I have and is used but OK not as clean the Campy, but is more "modern"

I would appreciate some input, just wanna have some fun with this

#2 sounds like it would shift faster and climb well. Will the rear spacing fit both of these?

If the Campy is in good shape you might want to save it from the bad weather of the riding you are describing. Little bit of road salt will go a long way on making it no longer 'in good shape'.

Might be hard to build up with 7 speed as that is typically 126 rear spacing and the Surly Cross-Check has 132.5 rear spacing.

Axles and axle spacers are your friend..easily fixed. All my wheels are 6 or 7s freewheels and all are 130mm.

I think I will, and build her up with the Shimano, 97CSI and oliver1850 convinced me. I'll save the Campy for something a bit more apropo. BTW the spacing is cool on all my stuff 130 thru and thru. Thanks all!... bike threads are fun

Number 2 - the xt rear der is a great option.

My Riv Allrounder has Ultegra Octa-Link triple cranks and 135mm Shimano hub with 11-34 7spd. cassette, newish silver XT rear derailer shifted by Sun Tour Power Ratchet barends and it's so good that I have been saving a few 9 and 10 spd. groups in my garage.

With the Triple? I guess my big hump all along is commiting to a triple or a wider range double. Fashion says double, reality says triple. I maybe need to embrace some reality, or not. How do you like the bar ends. I am looking at a pair of vintage campy ones on ebay (shhhh) to use instead of the downtube shifters if its a campy build
