This may sound like a dumb question, but with all the various combinations and stuff I have made work thru 40 years of cycling, I've never tried to use a 8/9 crankset with a 10 speed chain. Done the opposite though.

Going on a little NC Mountain trip real soon, and thought I would use my 8/9 Campy Racing T crankset with a 10 speed group (usually use it with 9's) if it will work OK. I have a TA (9/10) for outer 50 tooth ring, and a Campy 10's 30 for inner ring, but want to use the Campagnolo 8/9 middle 40 tooth ring with 10's chain. Do have a 10's triple FD. Will the 10's Campy chain run quietly on this 8/9's ring? Thanks

I can't say for sure for Campy, but I'm running a Shimano 10 speed chain on 9 speed MTB cranks and it's smooth and quiet, so you'll probably be fine.

Yes, no problem. I use a KMC 10s chain on my 1986/7 C-Record crank with '8s' rings, no problem. Don't need a '10s' FD either.

I'm running ten speed Ultegra on a 7 speed Campy crank. Works like a charm.
