View Full Version : Tool box?

I have a Serotta CX dirt road bike. I have bottle cage mounts under the down tube. I'm looking for a 'tool box' (for all the necessary bits and pieces some put in a saddle bag) that is designed to secure to the cage mounts and not interfere with the chain rings or the front wheel (not too wide and not too long). Is such a thing available (or do I have to fashion one myself)?

Thanks, Sparts.

King's Behold tool pouch and cage: http://www.kingcage.com/products-waterbottle-cages.html from the folks that make the wonderful King's bottle cages.

Top Peak or somebody makes a pod the fits into cages for tools and stuff. If you want a pre-wrapped solution, that's one.

Personally, I think you're best off with a water bottle in a standard cage.
1. You can still use the cage for water, if you need to.
2. Water bottle plastic is grippy, so you are less likely to loose you tools and are softer for less rattling.
3. Water bottles are cheap, even the super wide mouthed ones that would make good tool pods. Replace it when it gets screwed up.
4. Water bottles are (usually) watertight, which is really nice if your cell phone is in there.
5. Water bottles don't come with someone else's idea of the proper kit for your needs. Build a kit that works for you using the best stuff, or the cheapest sale items.

I am using a Lupine Lights battery bottle in the seat tube cage for my tools et.c., but I want to free it up for a second water bottle. Under the down tube is the next best place for the tools. Are there stubby short bottles available that won't catch the back of the front wheel? - I have some toe overlap and a standard length bottle is too long under the dt.

Thanks, Sparts.

Geez, how many tools are you carrying? What's wrong w/ a larger saddle pouch?

This isn't exactly what you asked, but I like the Bike Roll that Soul Run ( a forum member) makes. Great service, great product and a great price. I have a large and a small one (both double strap), larger for longer rides and more tools, smaller for shorter jaunts, and they both work well. I recommend them.

Well, enough bits and pieces to cover most situations. The volume of my kit isn't that great, but finding a suitable container for under the down tube is what I'm hunting after and so far failing to find. With toe overlap there isn't really enough room down there for a standard length bottle (my Lupine bottle won't fit there).

Thanks you for the suggestion. I'll take a closer look, and I hope to find something that can attach securely to the underside of the down tube.

an 18 oz. peanut butter jar fits pretty snugly in an elite cage. don't know if that's quite long enough for what you want to carry. perhaps there's some other grocery store container just the right size.
I use a tennis ball container. Just the right size for the cage, plenty long, and has a plastic top on it. I pick them up from the recycling bin at the local tennis court. They are usually clear plastic so you can see what's in it.

Wasn't there a Tune tool kit holder that fit in a bottle cage? (On second thought, maybe that was just a Tune bottle.)
