View Full Version : First training ride on new race wheels
Finishing up a great 2-hour training ride yesterday, not more than 200 yards from the parking lot, this happens. First race of the season is this Sunday. :crap:

why do you train on race wheels?

Yep, I was fortunate that it was only the tire. Also thanked the tubular gods that an LBS nearby just happened to have a Fango 32 in stock so it is now in my possession and being stretched on a rim.

Umm... to make sure everything checks out before I go out and race. You know, small things like ensuring that my cantis are properly set up after changing out the pads - clearance, toe-in, etc. The rim width is significantly wider on the Zipps than on my clinchers. If you got a new race bike, would your first ride be on race day?

this kind of stuff amazes me, the bad luck to have the stars align in such a manner for this to happen is against all odds really, tough break, but it happens.
nice wheels!

There must have been some pretty good aligning going on in the last 12 hours because when I went to leave for work this morning, I hopped into my car and started to back out of the driveway. Something didn't feel right with how the car was moving. I got out and walked around to the passenger side - my right front tire was completely flat! Somewhere between the trailhead yesterday and the short drive home, I had picked up a nail. :crap:
It could have been worse. I've had a nail go through the tire, the center of the rim and out the side of the rim on a relatively expensive Fulcrum Zero. The hole went between two spokes, so I epoxied the hole in the center of the rim, tapped down the metal on the outside to mostly close the hole, applied a little more epoxy and some touch up nail polish (metallic red).
If the nail had gone through the rim, you'd really be crying. I've read posts from riders who trashed a carbon rim on the first ride - ouch.

The nail really missed the rim with exactly no room to spare!
Ouch...that was close. How did the frame take it?
Good luck on your race.

... quarter of an inch over... say goodbye, $600.
Is that good luck or bad luck?

I have a nail hole in a front 404... It's been there for 3 years :p
at least you're shake down (training was the wrong word choice it sounds like) ride went well and you should be set!
Hope yor luck holds for the race! If it pays off again, your top 60 competitors will all stack up and get their bikes tangled, tripping the next 6 and you'll coast to a win.

Ouch! It looks like your tire is going to need a tetanus shot. :)
I'm glad that it was the tire and not someone's foot.
