Dear forum members,

We have identified one area that needs some special attention and that is with the forum attachments. We are very close to the limit that the database can handle, which is why people have had problems trying to add new attachments.

So what I'd like for everyone to do is to cleanup some of their unnecessary attachments. You can do this by going to the "User CP" link on the top control bar and then click on last link on the left side of the screen labeled "Attachments". This will show you all the attachments you have added to the forum. You might want to start at the end of this list by clicking "Last" which will show you the oldest files.

Obvious images that could be deleted are things that were posted in the classified section which have already sold or are no longer for sale.

You are more than welcome to keep any attachments that you would like to stay out there, but I would imagine there are plenty of images that are no longer valuable.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Maybe you should unsticky all the other stuff for now so people will actually read this; there's too much clutter on the top of the forum page.

That was painless enough. Even a computer illiterate moron such as myself can handle that procedure.

What about forum members who are no longer here? I think Viper wasted more bandwidth than anyone else in the history of this forum with his endless attachments.

Took out all classified pictures and other nonsense. I can hit the gallery too if necessary.

Done. Amazing how it starts to add up, even with small pics.

Done! I've removed about 20 old attachments.

A suggestion: you might want to edit the first post in this thread to give a status update and/or goals for the cleanup.

Nice - was actually fun to go back and see what stuff I have posted in the past. Many photos deleted.

Thanks for looking into the attachment issues.

Can't you automatically dump the files without user action?

Perhaps just require pictures be hosted externally and that people put in [img] links accordingly.

Attachment hosting (and supporting) is a luxury I'd venture most could care less about.

<snip>A suggestion: you might want to edit the first post in this thread to give a status update and/or goals for the cleanup.Good suggestion, we were at the limit of the database which is 4GB for the attachments and I didn't capture the total number when we started the cleanup, but our current status is
Total Attachments 57,109
Disk Space Used 3.87 GB

Attachment hosting (and supporting) is a luxury I'd venture most could care less about. Our plan is to move the attachments out of the database which will provide us with as many attachments that the physical hard disk will allow, rather than the limit of the database size. Before we can do this, we needed to get the size down since the attachment database was having some corruption issues because we were at the limit of its capabilities. So we wanted to have a good backup of the forum database before making any significant changes.

Here's a suggestion, which has probably already been made- allow linking of images from external sites, via the and tags- that way people can add images, such as an item for sale without straining or draining any of the database.

Ummmm......I think I found the problem.

I'm using 98.89 megs on 63 pages of attachments. :crap: Either I've been around a while or I post a lot of junk. Any one top that? :D

Sorry about that!

Even though we have resolved the attachments problem, feel free to continue to delete any old images that aren't needed/important anymore.

Thanks.

You should consider nixing attachments in the classifieds, since they're only really up there for a one-time sale, and then people forget about it, and it wastes space. There are plenty of other sites' space to waste for that (imgur, tinypic, etc). It makes sense for the Gallery and General Discussion because of the discussion surrounding the image may make or break a discussion, but not as much for the classifieds.

Photobucket (or similar hosting site.) is easy to use and then you're just linking to the photo.

William

This would be great. Simpler as well than shrinking the files to make them small enough to attach. Linking to a photo hosting site is easy and won't load up the servers with attachments.

Using image links is a great way to offload the image hosting from the Serotta forum. However, not everyone has a photo/image account; and doing the image link may be challenging for some users...so I wouldn't want to turn off the ability to attach images to a message post.

Remember that a large number of folks here work for 'less than enlightened' employers that block all photo websites. So if you're on a break or lunch hour, you can see nothing but text---unless the image is loaded on Serotta's server as it is with photo attachments.

It appears I can't delete pictures from threads that are closed or locked; is that the way it works?
