View Full Version : Spanish beef industry refuses to take the blame...

Was just perusing my favorite website this morning -- www.infocarne.com ("Everything about Meat on the Internet") -- and I see that the Spanish beef industry is not happy that they were blamed for infecting Alberto Contador with Clenbuterol.

Among other things, they point out that "Clen" has been illegal for a number of years in Spain; that its use in beef cattle carries serious criminal penalties; and that anyone who knows anything about "Clen" use or contamination should get in contact with proper authorities.

I guess they don't like being the fall guys for the "I sent out for steak from Spain" story.

In Spanish:

http://www.infocarne.com/noticias/2010/10/3064_el_sector_carnico_espa%C3%B1ol_muestra_su_rec hazo_decla.asp

Google's version of English (not bad...):

http://translate.google.com/translate?js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&sl=es&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.infocarne.com%2Fnoticias%2F2010 %2F10%2F3064_el_sector_carnico_espa%25C3%25B1ol_mu estra_su_rechazo_decla.asp

Moral of the story: if you are going to blame someone for the dope in your system, don't impugn an entire industry whose livelihood is at stake. Especially in your home country.

interesting indeed. i guess the moral of the story is that even if you're el pistolero, they won't take a bullet for you.

All right...my turn..."What's his beef?"

Maybe it wasn't beef, but horse meat. A euthanized race horse might have Clen in its system.

I wanted to believe Tyler and did believe Floyd for a while. However, AC already sounds like a broken man. Given the inherent toughness of an endurance athlete, you would have thought an innocent man would hold out hope a little longer.

Cycling will never get cleaned up without COMPLETE, 100%, retroactive amnesty for ALL past riders. This should include AC, Floyd, Lance, Miller and anyone else.

Otherwise they will continue to cover.

OK, now you're going to irritate the horse industry....and they'll put out a statement tomorrow.

I had time to go back and read the story more carefully; one of the paragraphs is not that well translated in English, but in Spanish I think they are point blank accusing Contador of making up the story to "avoid possible consquences that would hurt his image and professional future."

What sort of amnesty are you proposing? Allowing them to participate in the future provided they stay clean? Or letting them keep their laurels that they cheated to achieve?

I don't think the latter makes sense at all. And no one's gonna take the bait if they still have a chance of keeping their trophies.

accusing Contador of making up the story to "avoid possible consquences that would hurt his image and professional future."

Something that they, of course, would never, ever do...

Actually, the real scandal they have all been covering up for years is that they are all cannibals, eating the flesh of deceased racers. Hence the clenbuterol (sp?). Gross, but true.

Looks waaaay bad . . . story says he had eight times the level of the stuff that would indicate doping. This was the first year they've used this test at the Tour.

Oops . . .

I forget if it was already mentioned....but is it illegal for the athletes to use any type of IV, even if it just, hypothetically, contains water?

If the meat isn't organic it will certainly have traces of antibiotics and artificially introduced growth hormones in it. The meat industry at large is a disgrace on many levels.

It's no surprise an industry trade organization is pissed that someone is making an accusation "sin pruebas (without proof)" that might damage business. That doesn't mean some producer wasn't doing something illegal to make a buck. However Europe has a sort of bio passport system for livestock because of mad cow disease and you would think AC would have spent the month tracking down the source of the meat to corroborate his story.

The plasticizer finding might wind up being the bigger issue as he has said he has had no IV of any kind. The amount was supposedly more then you could get from PET water bottles, packaging and other sources. Combine that with the other positive and it doesn't look so good.

It is illegal except for medical emergencies (oh I am sure this will be ACs next defense :crap: ), which would be documented on the rider's medical history.

Oh sure, it's okay for the rich and famous, but not the poor cyclists...
