I have an Avid BB7 disc brake installed on the rear of my recumbent. The model installed has 160 mm rotor. Unfortunately the clearance between te rotor and the chainstay makes install and removal of rear wheel a very tight affair.

Can I simply install a new, smaller 140 mm rotor or do I need both a new rotor and a matching caliper?

Real question is are calipers sized specifically to match the rotor size or can the same caliper work with more than one size of rotor?

I recently switched from a 160mm rotor in the rear to a 140mm. Assuming that your rear brake uses an I.S. mount (as opposed to a post mount), all you should need is a new rotor and a new adapter. The adapter is bolted into the frame, and the caliper is then bolted to the adapter.

If I remember correctly, the 160mm front adapter is the same as the 140mm rear.

The caliper will work fine, you may just need a new mount adapter.

Eh, got beaten to it.... what he said

found the correct adapter in my parts bin and ordered a new 140 mm rotor.
