I know this has been well covered but remind me of best clincher tire choices for a mix of road asphalt, gravel, chat? Smooth and fast (enough)?
Thanks!

depends on the surfaces really. as a general great tire - vittoria open pave.

how big? if you've got clearance , there's some nice looking cross tires with tight tread for hardpack that should ride fine on the road. think exaggerated file tread like this. http://www.starbike.com/images/Continental/2009/hires/cyclocross_speed.jpg

I actually have a set of those off my old cross bike. Maybe not a lot of difference in how they roll versus something with less texture? Can go all the way up to 35. Roly poly's an idea or not durable enuf?

I like Michelin Cyclocross Jets: they're good on the road, terrific on hard packed dirt, okayish on gravel, and not to be trusted in real mud.

When I was in Portland on vacation last year I rented a cheap Fuji hybrid that I really liked. It came with some flavor of Ritchey Speedmax tires and performed great in all conditions - road, dirt, gravel, not much mud though. I put about 200 miles on that bike over the course of a week.

Yeah, I have 30s. They look wider than that to my eye, but I think the rolling surface, on pavement and hard-packed dirt at least, is actually quite narrow. But like I said, don't take them into the muck: you'll never get out alive.

Panaracer Paselas are good, not too expensive, and come in sizes from 700x25-37 I think.

I use the Speedmax when I'm riding a variety of terrain and surfaces.l Seem good to me.
