Yesterday I went to Jamestown with our kids to do some riding. We frequent the Island quite a bit during the summers. It just has a very nice rural vibe that we really enjoy. We decided to go to Beaver Tail to spend the day and explore.

To our delight we discovered that the trail system was more extensive then we had realized. We had explored a little of it on foot previously and found a nice hidden beach...but today we discovered a few more.

When we arrived we decided to crawl around on the rocks a bit before we went riding. The first thing we see is this eye sore....very unusual for this place. I hope she said no to the idiot! :butt:

It would be easy to miss this trail head driving down the road. Basically a tunnel through the trees.

More to come... Just discovered the rest of the pictures are too large and I'll have to re-format.

Intermission.... :)

Who put this tree in the middle of the trail? :)

Another hidden beach.

Great vista.

Hmm, which way to go..

Ok, this way..

Maybe not. We got about 50 yards down the trail and it started closing up to the point that turning the bikes around was quite difficult.

We found a rather large bridge... :)

It's a 179!! ;)

Not an epic jaunt in terms of mileage. And I don't have BBDave's eye for photography, but I had a great time riding with my children.

Nice to see Beaver Tail again, William. My wife and I got engaged on a hike there on March 15, 2003. (Yes, the Ides of March...I didn't learn anything from Caesar).

You should find out when the Narragansett Bay Wheelmen are doing there next Jamestown ride and join in, it was always one of my favorite rides. They lay out a great criss-cross pattern around the island to squeeze in about 50 miles, then do a cook out at the end. I used to plan my schedule around that ride.

.... I spent summers in Jamestown for 20+ years in a cottage 1 mile from Beavertail and my parents retired there in 1985. They lived there for 20 of the happiest years of their lives.
I love Jamestown and Beavertail, but I remember when the island was over-run with poison ivy and not a single store was open past 5 pm. Quite different now.

Love Jamestown, you must have been thirsty after your ride, were you able to find a bubbler over there?

Thank you for your replies folks! We really dig Jamestown and we try to get over here as much as we can.

Bradford, I'll be checking for that ride.

Quattro: That's bubblah. ;)

tch: The few stores are open past 5:00 now...but it still has that nice laid back feel to it.

SB: It was a choice, one hand to hold the bars, one hand to hold the camera/machete. I chose the camera so I could share with y'all. Left the machete in the truck. ;)

Matt: Very true!

Well, we spent the day in Jamestown again exploring, rock climbing, and enjoying the Sunny 82 degree April day.

I was going to document it with photos but the batteries in the camera died and we brought no spares.:crap:

So, use your imagination for a moment: Riding the Mtb today instead of the Effin Cross Bike and our childeren are about two feet taller. Clear trails, muddy stream crossing, miles of green trails with sweeping Atlantic and Narragansett Bay vistas, Calm Atlantic close in but GIANT waves just offshore (but not heading into to break), a white Boxer, a frisbee catching Australian Shepard, and a splendid lunch outside overlooking the Jamestown marina and the Newport Bridge.

All in all a wonderful day with my kids.
