I seem to have a recollection of their being helpful.

Ken's Bike and Ski (http://kensbikeski.com/articles/rentals-pg588.htm)

If you want to ride Tahoe (while I only have one racer built at the moment) I would be happy to lend you mine. It is your size.

Cheers,
Joshua

Bicycle Emporium (http://www.bicycleemporium.com/index.cfm?pageid=545)

Bicycles Plus (http://onlinecycling.com/articles/rentals-pg78.htm)

... are the only shops i know that do rentals.

I have friends who have nothing but good things to say about the emporium although i've never been there myself. it's a little bit of a drive to get there but they have a lot of bikeporn there.

I've shopped at Bicycles Plus and it's a good environment there. tons of roadies go there to hang out too.

If you're down for checking out some nice bike shops in the area...

The best bike shop in town (imho) is the bikebiz on Freeport. (BikeBiz (http://www.thebikebiz.com/)) They have the most knowledgeable, down to earth staff. it's a small corner shop, but they stock BMC's and Independent Fabrications.

The wheelworks in Davis stocks De Rosa's, Cervelo's, Scott, and Parlee if you wanna check that place out. they have a seven eleven serotta hanging on their wall collecting dust. they bought it off some lady who didn't know what she had. she wanted to ride it, but they thought it would be better to hang on the wall.... it's kind of a snobby joint also. WheelWorks (http://www.daviswheelworks.com/)

Have fun on the trail! it's one of the few gems here in Sacramento and i'm sure i'll miss it after i move in a couple weeks.

I lived in Sacto for a long time. The trail is a great thing in town, but not without its downsides. The first 8 miles, from downtown to Sac State are a little sketchy - big population of homeless and disreputable characters, lots of sharp turns and glass/debris.

From Sac State to Hazel Ave is nice. It is heavily used by cyclists, roller skaters, horses, runners, walkers, rafters, fishermen, etc. Pick your time of day carefully, it can be busy after work. Lots of parks along the way with bathrooms and water. Lots of wildlife, turkeys, rodents, snakes, incl. rattlesnakes. When you get to Nimbus Dam at Hazel Ave. the trail continues to Folsom Lake, but you will need to climb up the hill on the bridge over the river to get to it. From there it is about another 8-10 miles (IIRC) to Folsom Dam/Folsom Lake. There is good riding into the foothills if you exit the park for Folsom Lake (at the top of the last climb).

There are also ways to do a parallel ride on the side streets where you can enter and exit the trail, if you want some variety. You should do this with a person with some local knowledge, as there are lots of turns and cutting thru neighborhoods to do it. Local folks know of it as the generic loop. It will have a lot more little climbs as opposed to the gentle climb of the trail.

The American River is super clean and you can swim in it if you want.

Maybe try City Bike Works in midtown for a rental. They were never my favorite shop, but they are probably the biggest/full service place that might be able to inventory a rental stock. Bike Biz on Freeport is a cool old time race oriented shop, they are small, but solid.

Jim,

How long are you in town? What size shoes and frame do you need? If you're here into next week perhaps I could find you a pair shoes anyway, and possibly a bike too. We could meet up east of town and I'll show you around some of the lower foothills.

Could not agree with you more about the "SNOBBY" part. :D
