An as yet unidentified unkind soul has taken to scattering sharp carpet tacks on the trails I ride. I'm using Schwalbe Marathon Plus 35 tires, but these tacks are too sharp and I've been punctured several times this season. Which 700c tire in the 30-35mm range is the best defense - Armadillo by Specialized?

Thanks, Sparts.

Maybe a MTB tire that has tall knobbies, but I think a tack is sharp enough to do most tires in.

There is no defense against tacks, and every tire is vulnerable except for solids.

That is really horrible to hear that. I doubt they truly understand what a front puncture can do to a rider at speed. Last year during Ironman Louisville, somebody threw tacks in the road causing countless flats.

Maybe I should try a cyclocross tire with medium sized tread blocks.

Camp out, catch them, and give them a talking to.

No experience, but tubeless tires with a liquid sealant are designed to seal punctures such as the ones you describe.

Of course, that's just treating the symptom. To treat the problem, you'd have to catch the perps in the act and beat them into submission.

I think I saw Boonen testing these for next year's Paris Roubaix. 16 drilling though - I'm not convinced.
