Does Dura-Ace 7801 left shifter works for triple?

I think that the right would work with a triple, but not the left one which is a 7803 model.

Why is it called 7801? not 7800 or 7803.....

The 7801 shifters (both left and right) were a revision/improvement over the 7800...but both of these are the double shifters. The 7803 are the triple shift levers.

And once more, gotta wonder..since you can use a 7803 on a double, why make the 7801 at all?

As Keith said you can use the right 7803 lever for either double or triple, there is no difference in the back. The 7803 will not shift a double up front, that is why there is a 7801.

Actually, it will and does.

You just have to adjust the cabling so it will only use the bottom 2 clicks, not the 3rd (and uppermost) click. Its not the most elegant solution, but it certainly does work.

Same as using the triple 7803 front and rear derailleurs. They will work. But again, not the most elegant solution.

I went from a complete 7803 grouppo on my Moots to a compact double. All I had to change was the crank set (and do some adjusting). It can be done, have no doubt.

Good luck!

really close in shifting efficiency to a double front shifter.

Actually is does and I have installed dozens of so called shimano 'triple' shifters onto doubles. 105 level STI were never double OR triple, triple and double only, they never made a dedicated double triple at this level. Samp for 7700/1 and 7703. No triple for 7900 but there is for 6700(6703) and also 5700(5703).
