View Full Version : Serotta Pete:: Update

SPOKE
07-15-2010, 07:42 PM
As many already know Serotta Pete was diagnosed with a brain tumor. What I know so far is it is about the size of a plum and is pressing against his right frontal lobe.
Surgery is tomorrow at 12:30pm. Should take about 3 hours. I'll be with him and his family during this and will send out an update once I know more.
Please keep him and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Hopefully everyone saw this posted here (http://forums.thepaceline.net/) on the Serotta website...

As many of you already know, Pete Mckeon is undergoing surgery for a brain tumor. In typical Pete style, he continues to reference the "RED" in e-mail updates to us. Please join all the tremendously loyal forum-ites and the Family at Serotta in sending a prayer for his successful surgery and speedy recovery. As Pete put it, "they are going to work on the brain first and then reconstruct the face".

Pete also has an appointment with the Factory FIt Lab for a fit this summer and we stand ready to put him on a new ride to replace his Legend which was run over at Ride the Rockies (fortunately, Pete was not on it at the time). Get your butt up here Pete so that we can start your recovery in style; OTTROTT with the new "Stealth" matte finish?!

All our Best Pete!

Surgery is done an according to the Dr it went well. Didn't take quite as long as expected. They are putting bandages on now and will wake him up shortly. He'll be in ICU for a little while I'm sure.
That's all we know right now. I'll post more when I know more.

i left the hospital about 5:30pm. they still hadn't got Pete completely situated in ICU. He'll be there over nite with a CAT scan tomorrow to double check for any bleeding/swelling. MRI on sunday to verify that they got all the tumor and double check for anything else. Dr indicated that he may go home monday afternoon if all goes well. Pathology report by wednesday.
His wife and kids are relieved but very tired. I'm relieved and very thankful that all went well. Pete's a tough old bird so I expect he'll be back to fighting strength shortly.

OK - I am sure Pete has top notch care.... but just to toss out there a possible solution to all of the trials, etc available, PLEASE research the MOSS REPORT.

WE used them for my mother in law - while not cheap ( a grand + back 10 years ago) it was the only place that objectively looked at what was available (besides the typical chemo and radiation) at the time who had research to support possible experimental programs, etc.

Either way,

Fight the good fight Pete. My wife gets her subclavian shunt put in on Friday for her aggressive chemo treatment. The first thing she ask me was how is your friend on the serotta forum doing? Cancer has a way of forming a bond that's hard to describe to people who have never had the disease. She is pulling for you and so am I. Sometimes I feel what ive gone through is like a flu or cold. Pete, we are all in the battle to fight this shiity disease and we will win. Sorry for the rant.

Pete,
I just got a call from BBD about what has happened and would like to say that from what I have seen and heard about you, that tumor has no chance. Dave said that the surgery went well and I hope you will be back on your bike soon, if you are not already.
All my best,

Hi Pete -

Maria and I are so happy to hear that you are up and about and have a plan of action. As you know Maria went through surgeries, chemo, radiation and six months later was riding in Italy. Time to plan a trip for your comeback!

Dr. Henry Friedman from the DUKE program called my wife Linda today, He is world known and is on the path to get me fixed.!!!!

We were to use someone else who is good , but friends have called in favors and he is the best!!!!!! and he took time to personally call and start a process.

This is wonderful news but means chemo and radiation will be a little later for he is to look at pathology samples and everything else.

Other news is that I will be going to see Ben and Stan early OCT for a new toy - - - the OTTROTT!!!!!!!!

Life is good and lots of wonderful folks out there... THANKS for all the support

Just let us know what red that might be....

P.S. Tonight (Aug 8th, a friend who is battling her second round of cancer, chemo & radiation just called to say that the cat-scan showed NO CANCER!!! Good News...)

RED wine, or beer will be in abundance when it is behind me. (for all of us)

I actually got to drive today and even go to the gym for a workout. Lighter than usual and the "usual" is prior to surgery.

Trying to gain some strength back prior to CHEMO. We are still moving all the tests to DUKE and I hope we are done by TUESDAY and Dr Friedman does a plan and we get started in a week.

I can not put into words how much I appreciate your support BUT we will celebrate putting this behind me.!!!!

Thanks again PETE

Thanks....yeah the early mornings are sometimes difficult. Henry Friedman from DUKE as of this morning has all the info from the activity over the past 4 weeks....so we should have our first meeting with him by end of week and I would think the treatment will then start next week.

Throughout the whole ordeal, each phase can be very stressful on you and your famiy.

I have had a chronic illness since mid 80's.Been fighting it since then. No answer for it, only treat symtoms.. For the first time in this last year , Ive been hospitalized several times, and have been in bed for the last six months.

I certainly understand occassional rough nights.

I admire your fight and attitude.

Rest and get strong...

Thats very kind of you, cant do much of any traveling at this time, if and when I get stronger, I certainly will consider it...

Perhaps when you are finished going through your ordeal, I will give you a history of my illness.

Dont want to bother you at this time, you have enough to deal with..

Had another MRI last evening and I hope the pesty Tumor is history. I will be back with them at 9AM today to hear their finding and plans for treatment. It looks like the Chemo and Radiation will start toward the end of next week. Depends on how long it takes to make the mask they put on your head for the Radiation sessions.

I am a little nervous this morning to hear what the MRI showed OR hopefully was unable to show.

Lots of very nice medical folks there and also many folks who are in the same challenge that I am.

Again thanks for all the notes and encouragement. WE(you and I) will be having MANY glasses  when this is behind me - - So stay Thirsty for the bars in SARATOGA or RALEIGH, in the fall, will be for us!!!

Last night we went for another MRI at Duke, this morning we met with the doctor, and the MRI which was almost one month since my surgery showed no growth which is wonderful for such an aggressive cancer. They also said the doctor that operated did an outstanding job. Tomorrow we go back for more meetings in the morning and to meet with the radiation oncologist. The treatment will consist of radiation and chemo for 6 weeks M-F, with an MRI 2 weeks into radiation and follow-on radiation every 2 months. After the six weeks, I will be in a maintenance mode which will consist of chemo 5 days a month for 6 months, this is taken orally.

And again thanks for all the support and prayers. Look forward to seeing you either in Raleigh in the fall OR in SARATOGA NY.

I did read the book about LANCE that was his first book when he was diagnosed with cancer. I appreciate it being recommended to me,
