You should be more polite. :)

Hope she is ok. I don't have any knowledge of the stuff but some knowledge of self defense can be very helpful since that is often times the first line of defense.

Is it possible the canister was out of date?

I'd contact a local police department and see if they have someone with knowledge of women's self defense techniques or mace usage. There may be a stronger or more reliable formula for your girlfriend's application.

There are some mace devices which combine pepper spray WITH tear gas, so they don't require a direct face hit to be effective. They're usually called "Triple Action" because they have pepper spray, tear gas, and UV dye to tag the attacker for later identification. This might be useful to your girlfriend.

I"m curious; why was the mace she carried ineffective?

I'm interested in this because I carry mace in certain circumstances. Report back if you can.

Not all pepper sprays are the same. If you are going to carry chemical deterrent.....Cold Steel Inferno is a top rated product for effectiveness. Different then other sprays, watch the demo. Get the dummy spray to practice with so she can get the feel for the drawing and deployment of the product.

Muay Thai (emphasis on "old Style"), Filipino open hand, edged or impact weaponry is my focus. I agree on handguns but not everyone is comfortable with that option. I would recommend Inferno before a taser. But that's just me. Obviously avoidance of dangerous situations is key, but unfortunately sometimes you just don't have a choice in the matter.

I have nothing to add to this discussion.

I do, however, have a request:

If you don't have a good suggestion stay out of the thread.

I hope everything is ok.

I have carried and used several different types in my 15 years on the job and some people are just not affected as much as others or can fight it off sometimes. It could have been an ineffective application. Some are spray/stream and some are in the form of a fog or mist. I have the fogger and don't like it as much as the stream due to cross contamination. I have "painted" Skids with both and have had good results with the stream. the fog can get blown around if its windy or or a hard ac duct is blowing. I did have a chance to use the Vexor Fog and it deployed a lot of product in a strong fog.

I like the Tazer but only after training and feeling it. Those fail every so often also. There is a new civilian taser on the market that has 3 or 4 shots and you can dry stun with it (touch someone without shooting the darts) We had some guys trained ,but, our chief does not beleive in them due to some incident of a skid having a haert attack. he would rather have us pigpile and hurt someone or get hurt ourselves..(i'm being funny here..) We can't wait til we can get them..

You could always put $10.00 worth of rolled quarters in a duct taped athletic sock..

I have treated many a cop who has been 'taken out' by their own pepper spray... usually from cross contamination, once from a 'partner' attempting to 'paint' a suspect but ended up hitting his partner... OOPS!

Mind you - they have training. To use anything effectively, you must train.

Hope she is O.K.

As far as tasers are concerned, they aren't legal everywhere (same for mace) so make sure you know the law. Training also a must.

Good luck!

first of all thanks for the replies. she is OK.

second: she had to use it on her brother's crazy wife  that's why i kept my OP short and concise.

her brother's wife has military training so she might have been desensitized to the pepper. she took the spray hit pretty good and she still kept going.

i don't think the spray will be enough to stop a man that wanted to attack her. she usually works night shifts too.

i had bought her the kind that had tear gas/uv/pepper and it is supposed to expire in 2012 or 13.

i just want to get her something very potent and effective and hopefully others will look in the thread and be educated on tasers themselves.

I hope she wasn't seriously hurt.

The bottom line is no matter what she chooses, she needs to train. Be it a realistic open hand system or the choice to carry a weapon/deterrent. Conflict avoidance, counter-offensive, and offensive techniques are key.

Get familiar with local laws as far as what is legal and what isn't.

Good luck,
William

i couldn't agree more. she's disciplined with weapons/deterrent.

she comes with me to the range and she can even field strip both of my home protection tools.

she knows to only take out her mace when it's absolutely necessary.

CCW's are hard to get in CA right now. with our budget cuts with law enforcement and education, we need to be able to protect ourselves.

cops taking 30 minutes to answer a 911 call isn't enough.

With all due respect to LEO's.... 99% of the time, they get there after the fact. IMO, that's why you need to learn to take care of yourself until they can get to you.

I'd rather know it and not need it, then need it and not know it.

Or a modified version on weapon/deterrent carry....

I'd rather have it and not need it, then need it and not have it.

Glock G26 ;)I prefer the 1911 .45ACP model taser. Auto reload and considerably more effective. Hang-on tight and pull the trigger.

As stated a few times above...........pick your protection and TRAIN. No replacement for knowing how to use your protection of choice.
