I just bought a set of 9 speed campy wheels. The cassette range is 12-23 (I think). I have a 10 speed cassette (12x27). Is it possible to dis-assemble the cassettes and swap the cogs to get better gearing for climbing? Thanks all!

Why don't you just use the 10 speed cassette?

I should've elaborated. I bought a 9 speed campy rig for my son. But the gearing is pretty aggressive for where we live. So I thought I might beable to change out some of the cogs from my 10 speed campy cassette...

you can get a jTek Shiftmate and then use Shimano 12-27 Cassettes or American Classic 12-28. I'm not sure you can go bigger than 26 teeth on a Campy cassette. Since Campy wheels are less common than Shimano you can probably easily find a swap.

I don't know if you can use 10 spd cogs mixed with 9 speed cogs because the spacing is different which is one reason they have to offer 9 speed and 10 speed chains.

I have used TA Zephyr and Sugino triple cranks with 26-36-46 and 28-38-48 rings with 9 and 10 speed Campy groups too.

I think folks have swapped some inner parts in Campy shifters to convert 9spd to 10 spd. Then you can get a 10 spd. 13-29 cassette.

Lots of ways to skin this cat but they all take some $$$.

Thanks everyone. I was hoping it was an easy swap. But the "kid" will just have to get STRONGER and use the current get-up! :D

10 spd Campy cassettes fit just fine on 9 spd Campy hubs... although Campy doesn't make a 10 spd 12-27 cassette...

On the other hand, if the entire drivetrain is 9 spd:

Depending on the cassette, some cogs are on carriers---that restricts your options. If it's a loose cog cassette, you can mix and match 9 and 10 spd cogs (very similar in width), although you must use the yellow 9 spd spacers throughout. Sometimes the ramps which facilitate shifting on the cogs aren't matched well when you do this, so shifting quality can suffer (although not much at all in my experience).

I've built a 11-29 9 spd cassette using a mix of 9 and 10 spd Campy cogs and it worked fairly well.

Thanks Thwart. I will post the "Italian Job" shortly

Why not upgrade the brifters to 10 speed?
