My middle and large front sprockets need replacing. I estimate distance ridden is 14-16,000 miles. Is that a reasonable amount of wear? When I took the bike in for maintenance and complained about an intermittent chain noise that sounded and felt like a link was dragging on a tooth, they examined them and that was the diagnosis.

I'll make the usual "wear is ride, rider and maintenance dependent" cop out but I'd say that's pretty reasonable wear out of a set of chain rings. I've got a set that's at 11,982 that are just starting to show signs of wear. I'll probably wait until 14-15k to replace them though I have a new set standing by should I change my mind.

Yes; that's about the mileage I would get out of a set of rings before needing to replace them.

I have Dura Ace chain rings with 25-30,000 miles on them with no problem--in fact, I have nearly 60,000 miles on my 53 ring but I don't use it nearly as much as my 39 ring. My cassettes last 15,000 miles or more and your chain rings should out last your cassette.

23000 miles on my 7800 with original 12/25 cassette and 53/39 rings.
Just put on my 7th chain which I replace when the park gauge is at 75%.
Not to Dave's liking but works fine for me. ;)
I use the 53 about 25% of the time and the 39 is just starting to make a little noise when the chain is new and quiets down soon after.
Next chain change gets a new 39 and cassette.
That will put me at around 26000 miles on the group.
