watching Aus vs Ger.

What is all the buzzing noise in the background?

Are all those seated guys between the field and the stands...are they there for security?

Buzzing = Vuvuzela = Plastic noise-maker horn

wonder if they know the tune, Yankee Doodle? I used to play that on the kazoo.

"You can't enjoy the game without vuvuzelas," said 23-year-old Sazi Mhlwatika in Johannesburg.

"If there's no vuvuzelas, there is no game. It's just a traditional thing in South Africa. Abroad, they sing from the first minute to the end, here we blow vuvuzelas from the beginning to the end."

Maybe this explains why I'm not a soccer fan: I don't own a vuvuzela. ;)

I hear it takes some effort to blow vuvuzela. Not supposed to be as easy as you might imagine but what do I know? I've never actually even seen one. The noise doesn't seem as annoying anymore and now it just sounds like 'soccer game'.

It prevents the players and officials from hearing what's happening
on the field.
I believe they are banned from US football, baseball and many other
venues. The only place you seem to hear them anymore is international
soccer games.

And yes, there is always a security area between the fans and the field.

To me it sounds like living in a beehive. It doesn't bother me but my 11-yr old son can bear hearing it and won't watch with me.
