My wife has been commuting a bit the last few years and mentioned she'd like to get a better set of panniers for the task. Any recommendations? They'll go on a rear rack, and don't need to be heavy-duty weather-proof.

Thanks!

I commute with the Arkel Bug. Just one pannier carries all I need (change of clothes, laptop, etc.). I appreciate just having one pannier to deal with, instead of two.

Their other commuting bags are nice, too:

I used Lone Peak Sundance panniers. In one I packed my shoes, in the other my clothing. The Sundance is a 1500 cu in. model that sells for around $80 - nothing huge, nothing very expensive or very complicated. It worked perfectly, and it's also fine for light touring.

Campmor has them: http://www.campmor.com/lone-peak-sundance-panniers-2.shtml?source=GAN&cm_mmc=GAN-_-Google%20Product%20Listing%20Ads-_-Primary-_-

Spend your money once, get her a waterproof set of ortleib backroller classics.

They are really nice. That said, I no longer use panniers. But once a month I kick myself and wish I did!

For commuting, check out Nashbar's small panniers. They're big enough for shoes and a change of clothes. Plus, they're water resistant and always on sale. IMHO, "real" touring panniers are overkill for a daily commute.

If you get a large pannier, just watch out for heel clearance. You might be better off with two smaller ones, rather than one large.
