View Full Version : "Elegant" Bike Storage Ideas?

In an effort to save money for our first place, my wife and I moved into a one bedroom and lost a lot of space. I narrowed my stable down to two bikes (one road/one track) - now I need to come up with a "elegant" (i.e. nice looking) storage system.

The bikes will be in our living room. It doesn't have to be great looking - I was thinking a compact, floor-to-ceiling stand. Topeak (http://www.amazon.com/Topeak-Dual-Touch-Storage-Stand/dp/B000FIE4WC/ref=pd_sbs_sg_1) has a nice, functional one - but not exactly living room material.

Maybe someone out there came up with a self-made solution they could recommend? There are some nice wood stands out here - but they just end up having the metal hangers you can find at home depot attached.

Any ideas?

I don't know whether you have any flexibility with respect to putting holes in the wall, but I use several of these. They're in my garage though. One mans "elegant" is another mans "eyesore" :D

Here's a picture of one in use:

They do let you store a couple of bikes in a pretty compact space though.

Yea - I have one of those. I love it - very minimal. Unfortunately, it has to be flush against the wall. Thanks for the suggestion!

I use that Topeak stand in my dining room and have no problem with it's appearance. Most importantly, put your two best bikes on it and no one will notice the stand itself.

I got mine from Amazon and that's a good price with the free shipping. Quality of the stand itself is better than I expected and at least the equal of my furniture.

A few cautions though.
1) I feel the bikes are less secure from theft when on display in the house than they would be chained up and out of sight in the garage.
2) The quick release adjustment lever on the stand must be torqued to the spec in the owner's manual (6-8NM) or the stand will slip and drop the bikes. Mine arrived greatly under-torqued.
3) Place a ceiling tile or piece of plywood (painted to match ceiling) between the top of stand and ceiling or you will likely dimple the ceiling.

Where can you purchase one of those mounts?

This one may be a bit more elegant than some. I built something similar in mahogany which lasted me thru my apartment years.

I like Cycloc, expensive though.

The Cycloc setup looks pretty cool, but I would think you would have to be careful with them around thin-walled frames.

Somewhere in this forum (I've looked but haven't been able to find it) is a picture of a number of track bikes on a wall with a high ceiling. It's a very elegant and modern look. Maybe someone else will remember how to find it.

Were they Cinelli display racks?

Were they Cinelli display racks?

Maybe. I seem to remember tubular AL, two bikes per rack stacked one above the other, like the wooden rack shown above (which is also quite nice IMO) but with cleaner lines.

Nice rack.

Had to be the one to say it ;) Wouldn't mind having something classy like that.

The wood ones look nice, I was thinking I could probably construct something from wood that would look pretty nice.

That's it. The fact that they are supporting track bikes, which themselves are quite simple, makes it particularly elegant.
