The dilemma: How to have enough space to carry our family of 5, plus the dog, and enough gear to go away for a few days on vacation.

The vehicle: 2010 Toyota Sienna mini-van.

The complicating factor: I'm 5'6", my wife is 5'2" and the van is pretty tall already so mounting a carrier on the roof rails seems like trouble when it comes to lifting it, opening and unloading etc.

Idea: Install a trailer hitch, receiver type. I already have a receiver hitch bike rack so I can use that when I want to carry my bicycles.

Question: Is anyone using a hitch mounted cargo carrier? Likes, dislikes, recommendations?

Thanks.

I looked into hitch mounted carriers a couple of years ago. I ended up going a different route, but they make sense in that they are easliy accessable and effect gas milage a lot less than top mounted carriers. I would recommend a swing out so that you can easily access the back of the vehicle.

I bought a flat basket tray type ,that alows me to carry 3 bikes.
Bought at tractor supply.Surpising economical to purchase,

When not using for hauling bikes, it can be utilized for an assortment of other dutties, luggage, coolers, etc.

If you are fairly strong, you can install it by yourself., otherwise it is suggested to have two people available. One at each end ,and slip her in the whole.

A third class type hitch is required

Yes...like above noted....Use a 2" receiver for that. Much more stable.
