cadel and vino fell asleep. then their respective teams forgot to wake them and fell asleep themselves. then they woke up and it was too late and they lost mad time. reminds me of the time oscar perreiro got back 30 minutes in the '06 tour, except that this time astana and bmc really should have known better.

"BMC had one man in the break – Brent Bookwalter – but sport director John Lelangue soon called him off to fall back to the GC group to help with the chase."

Why would you do this? Isn't this guy actaully kind of good? I would think it would be a good idea to have a guy in the break...

But, I guess that's why I'm a Coastie and not a DS... ;)

Could it be a case of losing the battle but winning the war? The mountain stages coming up are supposed to be the toughest ever. Maybe they are pacing themselves? They are still only halfway through with lots of riding left and nobody is dominating so I say it is anybody's race. Exciting to see a race this wide open!

How on earth could they let that happen?

40 racers is not a break away, the other riders were dropped.

From the Velonews article it appears that the radio reports were spotty and that when teams got the news, the gaps were already sizeable.

Guess it shows that you still need a road captain to pay attention.

The pics of Evan and Vino are priceless.

Even if radios were down how do you not look around and notice a MUCH smaller field. Then notice almost no Sky, very few Cervelo Test Team and zero Caisse d'Epargne jerseys.
Wiggo and crew were putting the hammer down.
AWesome stage.
We've got a real Grand Tour race on our hands right here fellows
Gonna get good!

Racing is so much better without radios and riders on autopilot!

So here's the question, and I almost want to put money down on it:

Who will be the first original GC rider to get caught for doping?

Vino - just got off a 2 year ban, riding for his favorite team, won LBL, 10 min behind - I say he goes to the bus tonight, "hey coach, shoot me up"

CAdel - stripes on his jersey, so maybe he'll risk it, "they won't test me, I've got a reputation" - if you check out the pic from today after his "finish" I can see the lure, esp since he hasn't won a grand tour in... EVER

Ivan - that handsome devil

Carlos - TOTALLY out of it (yesterday) TOTALLY back in it (kind of) today, but still 7 and change behind. Pretty much a joke after last year's tour, obvious jealousy, especially towards his Spanish Newspapers who paid him NO attention, and gave it all to Alberto. Could he be desperate enough for the lime light again?

It's just a face saving way to say the GC guys got burned, smoked, and dropped.

That wouldn't have happened if they had radios......wait, they DID have radios....

Props to Arroyo - he held on. Friday's stage where he got dropped on the BIG climb by a couple of minutes, came back on the descent to pass everyone but Basso, Nibali, and Scarponi and get within about 30 seconds of them, and then end up losing another couple of minutes on the final climb - jeez, that was some exciting racing. Basso was pretty incredible in the hills, as were Nibali and Scarponi - those three seemed to be together pretty much all the time. And they'd have been the podium if Arroyo hadn't been in that break that turned it on its head. Overall, a really entertaining Giro, helped by a lot of bad weather.

So, can Cadel ever win a grand tour? The evidence says not. The year he finished second to Sastre in the Tour looks like it was his best shot.

I've never had faith in Cadel. Something is missing - confidence or finesse? He just doesn't look relaxed on the bike. That and his team never seems to rally around him like other GC contenders.

OTOH, Basso and his team looked great.

I thought it was an exciting race.

i have never liked cadel but he has definitely grown some balls since his worlds win. of all the contenders, i also happen to think that cadel is also the most likely to actually be clean. may also explain why he has never won a grand tour.

I like Cadel and even more this year... I think the comment about his team is right on... this year, half his team was in the ToC and I'm not sure that team was good enough to begin with to be able to lose half... No doubt Basso had the stuff this year, but he also had one of the strongest teams in the race... I'm pulling for Cadel when he has his whole team at the Tour...
