secratariat's run for the triple crown and particularly his belmont win in 1973 was my greatest sporting event seen to date. hopefully this movie will be done in good taste for such a great champion:

Secretariat wasa awesome. No horse had won the triple crown in 25 years.

Thanks for the clip of the Belmont Stakes. I had forgotten that only 5 horses were in that race -- I wonder if that would happen today, or if more would enter to take a shot at him?

From Wikipedia:

At the finish, he won by 31 lengths (breaking the margin-of-victory record set by Triple Crown winner Count Fleet, who won by 25 lengths) and ran the fastest 1½ miles on dirt in history, 2:24 flat, which broke the stakes record by more than 2 seconds. This works out to a speed of 37.5 mph for his entire performance. Secretariat's world record still stands, and in fact, no other horse has ever broken 2:25 for 1½ miles on dirt.

Hope the movie lives up to the horse. My family took a trip to Kentucky when I was a kid just to see Secretariat. I was twelve years old, the horse was seven. He was absolutely amazing in "person", simply the most stunning and athletic horse I have ever seen. His early death was a tragedy.

Pumped for the movie--they filmed it down here and my friends were extras.

If you've never been to a horse race, you really owe it to yourself to go to one of the triple crown events. The horses that race are so incredible looking it's almost like they arent even the same animals as the horses you see on farms around the country. Simply amazing.

. . . did they have him pee in a really big cup?

Great performance? Yes. Fun to watch? Yes. But don't kid yourself. There's reasons those horses look so incredible and I'd wager they have little to do with long hours of doing hill repeats.

Secretariat was an impressive animal. I'm old enough to remember that year's triple crown pretty clearly and I think people appreciated what they were seeing even as it was happening. That said, I don't care if the movie is great or sucks. Diane Lane plays the main (human) character. I'm THERE!

so i have watched all of the tapes on all the triple crown races and as much as i love the belmont i do have to say that secretariat's run in the preckness was the most explosive for me. just watch how he goes from dead last to first. just unbelievable.

If you're implying that horses are doped -- yes, unfortunately, they often are. It's a scandal.

Still, the point stands -- a trained race horse up close and personal is nothing like the the horses you see standing around on a farm.
