Has anyone tried the K-Edge, Rotor, or Far and Near chain catcher? They come in neat colors.

I have the K-Edge Road Clamp-On Chain Catcher on my Calfee Luna, which I use with a triple crankset with small and middle Rotor Q rings. The small Q ring doesn't catch the falling chain as reliably as the original 30 tooth Shimano chainring, but the K-Edge works perfectly. The K-Edge which attaches to the derailleur does not have a long enough blade to work with a triple, but the Clamp-On version works fine. It's easy to set up and then trouble-free.

I'm still real partial to the N-Gear jump stops. Inexpensive, easy to set up and they work really well.

I use the Jump Stops http://www.gvtc.com/~ngear/ on all our bikes it will fit and have two on order for our new touring bikes. They're very inexpensive and super easy to install.

The problems with chain guides like Rotor and Far and Near is that they require a braze-on derailleur (they can't attach to a clamp-on derailleur) and they won't work satisfactorily with a triple. The only 'condition' to mounting the Jump Stop is that the down tube be round, not ovalized or have bottom bracket gussets like a Calfee.

Is anyone aware of one that would work on a Specialized Roubaix? Would like to get one for my wife's bike. Has a clamp-on FD and somewhat flaring seat tube, so it's tough to find one that works.

Thanks,

Thom

If your wife's bike has a braze-n front derailleur and she's running a double chainring, the K-Edge type will work nicely.

dave i'm ordering one of these for another bike i'm working on (which will have a triple crank). any tips or tricks on installing it or adjusting the f. derail. around it?

No, set up the derailleur as you would normally then install the Jump Stop when everything is running fine. The directions are very good and explain the set-up very well.

K-Edge now offers a clamp-on chain catcher for frames that lack a braze-on FD tab.

Haven't used it, (but probably should.) It mounts beneath your FD clamp.

They also sell a clamp-on adapter so you can use a braze-on catcher on a bike that lacks a FD tab.

This may be the only 'inexpensive alternative' for bikes like the Roubaix with clamp on FD's and unusually shaped lower seat tubes:
