I'm building up a new disc wet-weather, combo gravel-pavement road bike. What cables do you all run and like, or are cables an afterthought for most of you? I tried Nokon in the past, but didn't like them. Since this bike will have Avid BB7s on it, I'd like something that works well with those brakes (DA shifters). Thanks.

but maybe you already know this. Avid makes two models of disc brakes: one is short pull to work with normal road levers. the other longer pull to work with vbrake compatible levers. think i'm right about this.

i would not assume brifters and any disc brake will work well.

then brake cables can be found in two different diameters. i found the skinny ones in normal housing allowed the brakes to actuate just like butter.

Yes, these are BB7 road brakes (for use with brifters).

I run cable discs on my commuter, cx and mtn bikes.

There is no finer cable than the SRAM Flak Jacket. They have semi sealed cables with sealed ferrules, then a sheath that runs over the exposed runs.

I used to change my cables every 6 months, I have had a set on for more than a year on my cx and mtn bikes and you'd think they were brand new.

Seriously these things rock.

Avid makes something called "Full Metal Jacket"... or at least they used to. It's a straight metal tube designed to replace a large chunk of brake housing. It reduces compression and improves lever feel. I like to match that up to stainless steel "slick" cables (Jagwires are pretty good) and if you have extra pieces of housing (Flak Jackets are great) that are sealed then even better.
