View Full Version : American Classic Conversion Cassette. Good, bad?

I'm looking to pick up a set of wheels that require a Shimano rear hub. The hub is an Edco Olympus.

I run a Campagnolo drivetrain.

The only option appears to be using American Classic's conversion cassette.

Has anyone used this product? How does it compare to a regular Campy cassette. It appears to be similar to a Chorus cassette, in weight and build (steel cogs, aluminum carrier). Would you recommend it?

Thanks,

Steve

You actually have 3 options.

1) the Am Classic cassette - I use them extensively, have done for years. They work just fine.

2) Wheels Manufacturing - conversion cassette. Same idea as the Am Classic one - just more expensive. I have never used this.

3) jTek Shiftmate - http://jtekengineering.com/shiftmate.htm - I have used these and they are flawless as well.

In my experience (admittedly limited w/Am Classic. I sold mine after 2-3 rides...), I'd recommend the Wheels Mfg. conversion cassette. Their 11-27 is great!

My experience with the AC 12-25 is that it is fine. Not quite as silky smooth as a Campy, but more than adequate.

using the american classic conversion 12-25. works fine no real shifting problems.

One more log on the fire for "works fine". I have Shimano wheels on my TT bike and the 12-23 and 11-23 both work fine.

alternatively, is there a conversion cassette going the other way? you know, running a shimano spaced cassette on a campy hub? don't know about dish, so is that possible?

2) Wheels Manufacturing - conversion cassette.

I use the Wheels conversion cassettes on my bikes. Work great.

Ditto on the Wheels manufacturing, shifts as smooth as Campagnolo, I ditched an American classic cassette after a couple of rides it just never shifted quite right and was always a bit noisy.

I've used a JTek Shiftmate (I think #3) with a 9sp Shimano cassette and Campy shifter and it worked perfect on the first ride, which happened to be a 1000km brevet. Fairly inexpensive conversion.
