I would say yes....While I have never tired it, I have done 7800 mixed with 7900 and see nor hear of any problems from other folks I know who mix SRAM and SHIMANO ..so I would say try it and see :)

The cassette is not the problem. The dimensions are identical between 7800 and 7900. The 7900 shifts marginally better with some revised tooth profiles, but the spider isn't quite as strong and some people find it flexes a bit too much.

I've switched all kinds of chains back and forth and all 10-speed chains are interchangeable (KMC, Shimano, SRAM, Wipperman, you name it) within 10-speed systems, and SRAM Red cranks are interchangeable with all DA 10-speed systems (though the Red chainrings weren't as stiff and the whole DA 7900 setup is so much stiffer that their front shifter depends on it for sharp shifting). You won't have actual chain hangups, chainline problems, anything like that.

what's the deal with the asymmetric 7900 chains?

Sure..all shimano/sram 10s cogsets are spaced the same BUT unless the ratio is unique to 7900(like a 11-28), use a 7800 cogset or better yet, 6600 or 105 level cogset. They are consumables, afterall. Same for the chain. Least expensive compatible cogset and chain. Ti cogs, shiny chains don't last any longer, don't work any better. Better places to put $, IMO.
