I need wheels pretty fast. I hate to drop the $ on HEDS so I wonder what othe options I have. I know Velocity makes the A23 but I do not want to build these up myself.

Thoughts?

Give Ergott or Ligero a call.

I should have stated 23mm wide like the HED C2. I have seen the Ligero set that looks nice but they are 19mm wide and I want to try 23mm for this set.

The HEDs are pretty much it for stock wheels to buy. Velocity is coming out with their own wheel with the A23 rim but I don't think it'll be ready for when you want it. You could also use the velocity synergy rim (slightly heavier and they offer an oc rear rim).

I see you can buy the A23 rim but I would prefer that a pro builds it up. I don't want to taco it in a crit :)

Like I said, give Ergott or Ligero a call and see what they can do for you. If you can buy a A23 rim, they can get their hands on it and build some wheels for you.

saw these the other day.

22 wide, not 23. but may be a good way to try out the wider rims.
no one seems to know much about c-4 tho...

check with Stan's no.tubes.com He is coming out with a road rim of around 22-23mm; not sure if it is on the market yet

DRC ST22 is 24.5mm wide (external) and made in Milan. I have a pair in black, 32 holes I would be glad to sell. They're very rare here, but popular in the UK as the Cyclist's Touring Club recommends them over Mavic.

as we speak, i have a set of velocity "a23" rims built with record hubs. the rims were weighed and measured at 430gms at my lbs. i don't know how you could beat this wheelset( fr, 28spoke, revolution, alu nip. r. 32spoke, 14-15, brass nip.
80lbs.,fr, 90lbs r., 700x25 vredesteins fortezzas. handling and ride on a new level of sublime.

After weighing the options I think that the A23 approach is what I am going to do.

I think a set if DA 7900 hubs. I want light for racing so I am thinking 28 all the way around.

Any better hub options for the price?

Well the heds are about 1k but anything lower would be nice.

Well before I make the blow to my pocket book this is what I am thinking.
Please chime in if it sounds flawed.

Velocity A23, DA 7900 hubs, xray or aerolight spokes with aluminum nipples and a 28 hole for front and rear.

Thanks

should be a solid wheel depending on who builds them.

I recently bought the HED Bastognes new 2010 model for $700 plus shipping they are only slightly heavier than the Ardennes. They were very close to the advertised weight of 1481g. They are going for their maiden ride shortly.

Here is a hub that I have been looking at:

http://www.c-4bicyclecomponents.com/site/RH-205-Rear-Road-Hub.html?st=menuJump

One of the nice things about this hub is that it can be converted from Shimano to Campy or vice versa. It is also very light and reasonably priced.

The A23 rims are only available in black. keep that in mind when getting your hubs/spokes etc. You'd think silver would be high on their list but I guess not. Anyway if I was going to choose a hubset I'd get the White Industries H series hubs. Check out http://fairwheelbikes.com/forum/index.php - Look at their wheel/hub page. They did a huge analysis of hubs from moderate to uber expensive so it is a good read.

Have fun.

Don - thanks for posting that experience with the a23. I've got an older set of NOS 7800 hubs I am going to build up with that rim. 36 rear and 32 front - so it'll be pretty bulletproof. Maybe not as light as my Ardennes but it'll be interesting comparing the ride.

i have a set of hed bastogne( sorry for my spelling) and they convinced me
about the benefits of wider rims. i used to use neutron wheelsets and they were wider than open pros and always felt better. they were wider. i probably could have run lower pressures. i am a club rider and we ride on a lot of marginal roads( paved ,bit very rough). i have gone to larger, lower pressure tires. you know that we are not on the clock. we just want to win the, occasional sprint to the county line. anyway, always enjoy riding.

Handspun is also building a number of wheelsets on the Hed C2's (DT240 or Hed's own brand hubs) and the A23's (I think 105).

I just ordered a set of Hed C2's laced to Ultegra 6600, 32 spoke 3x, for about $450. Looking forward to seeing how they roll with 24c Open Paves on my road bike. I'm a fan of wider rims since going to the Salsa Delgados (using a 28 or 32c tire) on my commuter.

After I weighed all the options and prices I went with the C4's as suggested.
The 2.4OS 20/24 with the V22 rim, C4 hubs, DT Aerolites for 620 including 2 day shipping. Good price so now I will see if they are durable. They look nice.

I would be especially interested in hearing your thoughts about the hubs. Assuming that they are of good quality and straightforward in maintenance, they are a hell of a deal for a light hub.
