If you want a lock for carrying on the bike in an urban environment, my favorite is the Master Lock Street Cuffs. The special holder takes the place of a water bottle cage and it snuggs nicely on its holder.
It needs a pole or parking meter to use. It snaps on quickly. You save a little time because you don't need to use the key to unlock it when you take it off the holder vs. unlocking a 'U' shaped lock to lock it to the bike.
The bad news is that a pro can beat it easier than a good 'U' lock.

Frankly, I rarely use mine unless I am on a group ride (rare) and we stop at a coffee shop. My $$ ride stays close and within eye site. My old '3' speed town bike in S.F. gets ridden around town and left outside as long as I want. But, I have lost a couple of '3' speeds that way.

That assumes you have a rack or pack strong enough to hold. They are heavy.
