View Full Version : When to retire that tubie?

I replaced my Conti 4000 tubie with a Conti Sprinter Gatorskin because I was getting flats. I was surprised to look at the rear tire before heading out on a ride today and find that on some of the tire the rubber is worn down and the casing under it is showing through.

Questions:
1) I have about 600 miles on these. Is that normal?

2) When do I retire them? when any casing is showing or when it flats or ...?

I ride at 110 PSI in back and 100psi in front. All miles are on smooth roads. I am 188lbs and a Sagittarius.

There's your problem :D

It's been a while since I used Conti tubulars but 600 miles is awfully short. I recall getting at least 2-3 times that with no flats. IIRC, the tread was worn flat in the middle of the tire but that's it.

600 miles seems pretty darn quick to me -- no panic skid stops where you had to grab the brakes like crazy to avoid an SUV that was running a stop light?

I use Sprinters and get many more miles on mine than 600(maybe 1500?).

Casing showing, time to retire that tire.

I am .1 offa ton and use 95 psi in both..

Variable by temp for me (as 60 degree winter days can see one last 1500+ while 100degree plus days will run em out a lot quicker, but never 600. Not without locking em up on the brakes.

You should be be getting 2K to 2,500 miles out of that tire.

Running Veloflex Criteriums (which are pretty sticky, methinks), my 120-pound wife gets about 1500-2000 miles on a rear, maybe double that on a front. 600 miles sounds really low if you haven't ever skidded the tire.

Well, that sucks. No skidding here. No unusually warm weather (its winter!). I don't over or under inflate.

I have another Sprinter Gatorskin. I'll try that one and compare mileage. 560 miles is pathetic IMHO.
