Many moons ago, I had dinner with a Professor. He was in the Hitler youth.
He was compelled to join as his parents emigrated back to Germany before
WW II began. He related many stories.

Ally bombing would melt the tar in the streets. People would die
standing up and literally sink into the street. The asphalt would cool
and the bodies would be left standing in the street, all absorbed to a
different depth.

This made traffic passage precarious. His job was to break off the
bodies at street level so traffic could pass.

At the close of the war, he was lucky to surrender to the Americans.

Apparently the Brits didn't trust the ancestors of todays IBOBs.

"Police superintendent T Dawson informed the security service from Spalding, Lincolnshire, that: "At about 4pm on Friday the 16th July, I saw a party of seven young men cycling along the Bolton to Spalding main road … These young men were dressed in shorts with jackets, each off them had what appeared to be a food can strapped on the carriers at the rear of their cycles."
