View Full Version : Road-ish frames with 132.5/135mm spacing and disc ready

To all - I'm looking to find a frame/frameset that won't break the bank and will be compatible with my 29er wheelset I just received from joex yesterday.

Criteria is that it has to have 132.5 or 135mm rear spacing and be ready to accept discs.

This frame will have Shimano LX Touring cranks, and probably FSA Metropolis bars and I'll be using SRAM gripshifters and SRAM X.9 rear derailleur on it. I'd run it with some fattish slicks and possibly CX type tires depending on the time of year and the planned route for the day.

I know about the Soma Double Cross DC frame
The Rawlands that fit 650bs and 700c
I know that Redline makes a Steel disc ready complete bike but not sure if it is sold as a frame or frame set.

Steel would be the frame material of preference - but I'm open to other materials as well if the price is right.

and a few other ideas are floating around in my head - but am I leaving out any really good frame or frameset only production products?

If so, please advise.

Thanks.

Mark

You mentioned the Rawland, I am a fan of thier frames (and of course the forks).

What about a Salsa La Cruz? I've heard good things about them & they are relatively inexpensive. Disc specific and I think it meets your criteria.

yeah - but my budget is more like the old rawland pricing though vs. their new prices of $750 or so.

This might work, but I am not certain about disc compatibility. $400 dollars.

Polyvalent is not disc ready

It sounds like the disc ready part could be the biggest hold up.

Steel frames are relatively easy to re-space, so if you found a 130 that was perfect otherwise, I'd just get it spread. Maybe that opens up more cyclocross options?

I am glad you like the wheels!

I am kind of caught up on this gunnar:

But that soma looks cool too. Pretty good price too... I like the rawlands, but if I spent that much I'd drop a couple of extra and get the gunnar.

Joe - thanks again.

I've got a frame already that I could use and just go 1x9 with it (it isn't set up to run a front derailleur). Maybe I should ultimately do that. Maybe with a 36 or 37T up front. Do you recall the range of the cassette on that wheelset? Is it 11:34?

That frame is currently set up as a single speed.

Your wheels caused me to put the N+1 theory into play - but maybe that's not necessary. Or maybe the N +1 frame s hould be a single speed specific 29er frame.

Decisions Decisions. :D

Mark,
Saw a guy on a local list selling a 54cm Vassago Fisticuff.
I think he was asking $350 for it (new).
Kind of a Monstercross-type frame but it has disc mounts and 132.5 spacing.
Drop me a pm if interested and I will send you a link to his ad.

Hah - guy's probably trying to make a profit from their (Vassago's) Black Friday sale on those Fisticuffs I bet. They were selling t hem for $250.00 on black Friday.

The nitpick I have with those are the really short head tubes they use on the frames. It usually requires a boatload of headset spacers to get the handlebars (especially drop bars) in the right spot.

Perhaps my answer lies in the 44 Bikes SnakeDriver frame that I currently have built up as a single speed with a Salsa Cromoto fork. Perhaps I just need to go 1x9 (it has sliders) on it and get stronger.

Plus smart enough to put the disc tabs on the chainstay rather than the seatstay. Makes racks/fenders MUCH easier.

I had a disc frame spaced at 132.5 and used 135 spaced wheels in it. I swore never again. It took 3 or 4 hands to spread the stays, align the rotor, cassette and derailleur. May sure the spacing is equal to or greater than the hub.

The problem is 135 spacing and a disc brake may remove the option to use Campy.

My buddy just got a Kona dew drop - 09 for I think 450 new and he raves about it, disc's 132.5 spacing, 700c wheels with 700x37 conti tires. Gorgeous cherry red color - Shimano sora drivetrain. He loves it.
