I certainly wouldn't want to ski down one of those. Why would I even try to drive up one?

Just saying... because I'm still around.

After an exciting winter commute in our Volvo V70 AWD (had to re-route twice as folks couldn't make fairly small hills), this definitely caught my eye.
I clicked on the more modern version with the Audis that I think are better looking, but then clicked on this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ObdPVYAGCXo&NR=1).
I can't read the subtitles, but those tires and the cable sure do make it seem less impressive.

1986 you couldn't give those cars away in the US.

*snip* "If any company can relate to Toyota's current recall woes, it's Audi. The German automaker was hit with similar allegations of unintended acceleration during the 1980s, when supposed faulty gas pedals on its popular 5000 series sedan were linked to six deaths and 700 crashes. Though the problem was eventually determined to be a case of driver error—people were hitting the gas instead of the brake—Audi had to issue a major recall. A 1986 60 Minutes investigation plunged the knife in. The investigation was later debunked when it was discovered that an expert had rigged a car to accelerate irregularly. But the damage was done. Audi sales dropped 80 percent over the next five years. It wasn't until 2000 that it regained its peak from 1985." NEWSWEEK

I had two, a '85 and an '87 5000 turbo quattro (plus an few others from the '80s). I think that the audis from the mid '80s to the mid '90s were the best cars they made.

I had (leased) a 1999 Audi A4 quattro 1.8T. I loved that car. The last year I had it I was based in Syracuse. That car went like crazy in the snow. When the snow fell I used to take it over to an abandoned mall/shopping center parking lot. Acres of fresh snow and blacktop to slide around in whithout fear of hitting anything.

The driver in the video had no choice. That model was back in the day that Audi had sticking accelerator problems! Took them two years to get over it from a PR standpoint and sales.

CHEERS!

You can see the snow flying up from the tow line pretty clearly at the front of the car.

Still cool.

No need to bother with that. Just back down, then run the tape backwards. :p

You guys are speaking my language! I actually used to be a HUGE Audi (A4) enthusiast before really getting into cycling. I still have my 1999 A4 1.8T quattro that I bought new in November 1998. My plan is to sell it this spring, actually. We'll see...it's going to be tough to sell b/c I have so much invested in it and I'll be 'downgrading' on my next (hopefully temporary) car. Anyway, it's funny you bring this video up, Thwart, b/c just 2 nights ago I was looking up one of my all time favorite Audi commercials...and found it, here:

my 1999 A4 1.8T quattro that I bought new in November 1998. Yep... my 2000 A4 1.8 Quattro is now 10 years old... and no plans to 'upgrade'. Still solid, dependable, and certainly fast enough to be entertaining.

Oh, yeah... and just unreal in rain or snow.

Trivia Quiz:

Does anyone remember a car commercial with the same premise that predated these Audi segments?

I know I’m dating myself but these brought back memories from a very long time ago.
