We spent the weekend in Mystic and did a bunch of exploring around the Seaport, and Stonington Borough/Harbor. I saw a few cyclists on the road and it made me curious about riding in the area. The William family had fun and everyone is talking about going back in a month or so. I'll take the Effin Zank with me if there are some good cycling friendly roads around the area.
Anyone familiar with the area?

I've done a few rides in the area but can't say I really 'know it'. Defintely nice area to ride. The local club is Mystic Velo and they do a lot of riding in the area. Might want to check here for more info:

Just be careful. There's hamburger all over the highway in Mystic, Conn. ( Sorry - I couldn't resist ).

Head north from Mystic. The numbered routes aren't too heavily traveled. Route 201 leads to 2 West, which is a two-lane that's tolerable and not too developed, but heavily traveled by people heading to the Foxwoods Casino. The casino is worth riding by, just to gawk at the gaudiness. The casino is practically out in the middle of nowhere, since they built it on reservation land, so the area immediately around it is VERY rural. Don't think it's Las Vegas! Rte. 214 is twisty and rural. In fact, From 201, take Wintechaug Hill and cut off a good chunk of that busy Rte. 2 West; it's another good, rural road.
Avoid Rte. 12, which parallels the Thames River. It runs through Groton, the Navy base, and Norwich, and is extremely developed and busy. Route 117 North is flat to rolling, and lightly trafficked. You could pick up 117 North, 214 East, then take ANY of these three right turns back to Mystic-Gallup Hill, Shewville, or Lantern Hill Roads, back to Mystic.
If you look at a map, you'll see several unnumbered roads that parallel the numbered routes (even numbers designated east-west, odd numbers are north-south roads), such as Colonel Ledyard Hwy, Pumpkin Hill Rd, and Shewville Road. I've been on many of these roads and they're fine for riding. In fact, Shewville Rd. dumps right into Old Mystic.
The closer you get to Route 395, the more "in the sticks" you'll be.
Just remember; north is your best bet.
