View Full Version : 'Extralight' rims - anybody know them?

I am looking at buying a cool steel Bianchi to strip the Campy group off of, and the seller (here in Europe) told me that it has 'Extralight' rims - as in the brand 'Extralight' that makes the super bling lightweight stems and cranks, etc.

They are built up with Chorus 10spd hubs, so I imagine that they aren't junk, but I can find no information on them and wonder if they are any good. They don't sound like a good match for someone who weighs 195lbs

Anyways, any thoughts about these rims? Are they made by Ambrosio and branded as 'Extralight'? If so, that would be cool . . .

Thanks for any feedback.

PS does anyone want a celeste Bianchi with Thron tubing and a chromed steel fork in size 57cm?

sounds like it might have AMBROSIO extralight rims. those would been found with campy hubs. are they box rims similar to mavic open pros?

I actually have a set of Record / Ambrosio Excellence wheels that look similar, but I have yet to see the wheels in person, so I cannot confirm. My first impression is that they are similar to Ambrosios, but I cannot tell.

It's a terrible name for a parts manufacturer.

PS who makes deep section aluminum rims? Mavic CXP33? Anyone else?

or use a IRD cadence aero, http://www.interlocracing.com/rims.html

What is the story with H+ Son rims? Are they any good? I am a fan of Velocity rims and when I Googled H+ Son, all I got was juvenile banter about fixed gear skid kids.

Are these rims worthy of building up on a set of Chorus hubs if I want to try something other than an Open Pro, etc on my Serotta? Are these road rims, or hipster fixie rims?

Just wondering...

You could try Dodici too. In Geneva, you might even be able to get Gipiemme tecno 716 or DRC UFO Speed rims, which are really deep too. Or just hang out on ebay.de looking for Campagnolo Atlantas.

Most modern rims that are deep have a 30mm rim depth. Velocity Deep V is probably the yardstick atm.

The early adopters of H+Son rims were fixed-gear kids, but it seems like they're gaining some traction with roadies (for training wheels) since they released rims with 24/28h drillings. They've gotten some very positive reviews on Weight Weenies (http://weightweenies.starbike.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=49366). I have never personally ridden them for an extended period of time, but I have seen and held them on many occasions. I can tell you that the finish and joints on them look phenomenal. I can also say that a very respected local wheelbuilder says that they are very easy to build up.

They look dead sexy to me (the bikes belong to WW posters)

But, the H+Sons are comparatively heavy. Roughly 1/2 pound more per rim over the 30mm Kinlins. FYI...

Also, the weight weenie component manufacturer is actually "Extralite". Not sure if this makes a difference.

Oh, there's no question that the KinLin rims are the lighter option. H+Sons are 12mm deeper though.

Hehe. I thought it was funny when I found people Weight Weenies discussing these rims.

Is it a painted braking surface on those H+ Son rims? Will they eventually wear off leaving horrid, irregular braking surfaces exposed? Like old Mavic Reflex rims? (Good, but ugly).

They are nice looking, but that's alotta weight to carry on a rim! I have no ££ for carbon rims, but Open Pros are sounding more appealing by the minute!

They actually have an excellent weight to depth ratio. Having built a pair of H+ I can say they are, in fact, excellent quality.
