Any experience out there with 9-speed SRAM road cassettes in an Ultegra setup with a Wipperman chain? Specifically their 12-26.

Not exactly, but I have used a BBB 12-25 in a DA 9 speed set-up. Awful. Even with a fresh chain it clunks into gear, is noisy and is much more sensitive to derailleur & cable set-up than the genuine stuff. Stay away.

I've used Wipperman chains on Shimano cassettes before with great success. Is a little bit noisier than a DA chain but works perfectly.

Keno why not try the IRD 12-28, 9 speed cassette for them NJ hills with your set up .

. . . a SRAM 12-26 right now with my 9-speed DA--standard DA chain--because last summer when I needed a new one, nobody but NOBODY had DA 12-27 in stock. It works fine. As long as the derailleur is adjusted properly I detect no difference. Same problem as the DA set-up, though--shifting is always much crisper with freshly cleaned chain.

I took a look at the IRD. Two things; the absence of the 14 leaves a pretty big gap, and price. I could go to the DA 12-27 for about the same $. Is the IRD a better piece of equipment?

I'm using Dura-Ace 9 speed and a Dura-Ace chain. I have a SRAM 12-23 on one wheelset, and a DA 12-23 on another wheelset. I can't tell a difference unless I look down, they both work fine.

I've used a Wipperman chain and no matter what I did, it was noisy and never shifted quite right.

I've seen big guys bend the SRAM cassette. I have one. I'd rate it one notch below an Ultegra as far as smoothness of shifting goes.

I agree, I have used SRAM cassettes forever, they work great. I don't like the wipperman chains for the same reasons you mention above.

running 11-32 with Ritchey 50/34 up front and all is well. I'm not sure if they are lighter, but for some reason, I like the sram composite spider that holds the cogs together. seems like a smart place to use plastic.

I went from Ultegra to Sram and back to Ultegra. I thought the Sram deteriorated a little quicker than the Shimano. But it shifted fine while it lasted.

My experience with SRAM is on the MTB side of the house...They bend under pressure, wear fast, and have a tendacy to shift rather clumsy...not crisp...When used with a shimano chain they work...with a wipperman they do not work as well...

As for my road bike it is campy cassette/chain...But at the first change I may try a wipperman with the campy cassette...Any idea on that combo out there???

I had Record 10 12-25 TI-Steel with the Wipperman Stainless chain on my bike last year. It was noisy from day one and never really got any better after 3500 miles. I swapped the cassette 13-26 (missed the 18t) and chain (C-10)this December. I did keep the connex link though. Works great.

I also switched lubricants to homebrew and also like that. Much cleaner drivetrain on both my rain bike(ancient 7 speed) and dry bike.
