More disposable overpriced crap from the big guys. The add a cog game every couple years is pretty lame since the newer components wear out quicker and don't work as reliably as the parts they replace.

But then they can sell you all those replacement parts at new (higher) prices because it is lighter and will make you faster and sexier:)

Is it compatible with Truvative HammerSchmidt cranks?

Let's hope so.

I smell the end of the world coming.

Have you seen the SRAM XX 10 speed cassette? It's a real work of art! But $$$. I guess Shimano had to do something new as well.

I'm not sure I'm strong enough to give up the granny though (actually, I'm sure I'm not).

XTR and SRAM XX are racing groups. They are designed to go fast. Everything else is secondary.

For all those criticizing: There are plenty of other, more durable and affordable groups out there for us "normal" riders.

Yawn. Be sure to re-post this is 2014 when XTR 990 rolls out with a 1x14 drive train.

Let's hope this change won't introduce reliability issues to otherwise-reliable Shimano XTR.

That could kill a kid in a spelling bee.

If shimano follows their natural course it will be 10 speed XTR now and in a year XT and most everything else will be 10 speed. I think that's what happened everytime they add a cog.

I thought 9 speeds was great I don't see much use for 10 speed besides marketing hype and a desire to make all 9 speed parts obselete.

So does this mean my 9-speed parts will be worth more? Oh ... wait.

Some may value the possibility of a 2X10 replacing their 3X9.

I don't think that's an equal comparison, and it wouldn't be for me, but it may work for some who don't like triple anything (even on an MTB).

Lately I've been asking myself why I ever went from an 8 speed mtb to a singlespeed. Now I remember why.

I'm into it.

However, I'm racing a '94 Bontrager OR with 8-speed Shimano and doing pretty well, coming in top-10 in all the Sport races I've entered. Gonna campaign Expert this year so I guess I should upgrade to one of my team deal Specializeds...or just Hippietech to rebuild my crappy Manitou SX fork. Prolly roll with the hippies.

Wow, that's 10 times as many gears as I have on my mtb right now.

It will make for more gearing options when mixing road and mtb.

Agree. However, Shimano already makes an 11-28 cassette in 10-speed, so how much more can we get without going to pizza-size cogs. They already provide quite a range of 10-speed cassettes, so if anything what we need are triple cranks based on 110 BC without having to go aftermarket.
